Thank you all for the advice. The discomfort is expected but the pain is not normal, from what I’m gathering. I think it’s time to buy a better guitar if it’s something that I want to continue to learn.

IMO, a new player needs the best, easiest playing guitar that he can get. All of the best players that I grew up with had much better guitars than I did. My 1st guitar was not a good one, and it wasn't a pleasure to play on it. When I would get the opportunity play on one of my friends guitars, the difference was obvious, and I knew why they were so far ahead of me as players. I was in my 20s before I ever got a decent acoustic. It's not just about the fretboard and action either, guitars like those Jasmines and some other lower priced ones, just don't have the tone and response that helps you learn.

Not a lot of people in my circle play guitar but my one buddy who’s pretty badass has a much better guitar than me. I have played it and know exactly what you’re talking about.
When I look for a new guitar, what things should I be looking for? Just play a few of them and find what jumps out at me?

What is your budget? If we know that, we can make suggestions. Also, do you want a regular size guitar, or a slightly smaller bodied one?

I’d like to spend no more than $250. As far as size, I wasn’t aware there were different sizes. I guess I’ll try them both out.
My buddy lives in CA and I’m in GA so I can’t bring him with!

It's going to be hard to find a decent new guitar for that price, and I suggest that you stick with a basic dreadnought. I bought a Recording King brand acoustic several years ago for about that price. I only wanted to use it for different tunings, but that has turned out to be a really good guitar. It has a really good sound and stays in tune, plays really nice. I would suggest that brand to you. I also looked at guitar center's website, and they have some used models of those at different stores, but they will ship them to the store where you shop.
But also take your Jasmine guitar with you, and see if they can do a neck adjustment on it. If they can get it right, you may decide that's all you need for now, or they may offer to let you trade it in, if it's in good shape. Clean the dust off of it before you go.
I looked at their website and found this used one, it's a cutaway version of the guitar that I have. It's located at The Arlington, Texas store, but you can get it shipped to your location. It has a solid spruce top, which is a good thing, and it also has a pick up so you can plug into an amp later, when you learn.

Thanks for the info. I went to GC today and was talking to them and he said to bring mine in and they’ll see what they can do. Better to do that than spend $300 on a new guitar.

Yamaha is also a good brand in that price range and Guitar Center usually has a good selection of different Yamaha models.
I'd also check any other music shops in your area but don't let a salesman talk you into just anything.

My personal advice is go with strings that produce the sound you enjoy. Pain is part of the game when it comes to playing guitar. It's kind of like running. They don't recommend starting off running 10 miles a day. You have to train and condition yourself to get to that point.
