This is why I’ve simply modified the GIR and fairways hit for my game.

If I have a clear second shot, I consider that a fairway hit regardless if it’s in the rough.

If I can putt it or it’s just close to the green and not in a bunker. That’s a GIR.

Not official, but it keeps me sane

GIR is still important, but your comment about being puttable distance is correct. Fairways hit is maybe the most useless stat in golf.

Do you count putts from the fringe as putts?

Could get confusing if you're using your stats to prioritize practice needs.

"I hit 10/14 fairways, 11/18 greens, and had 27 putts. How did I shoot a 90??"

I can butcher an approach off a soft fairway just as quickly as I can from the tree line
