Gun safe in non climate controlled area
Posted by southside on 6/9/21 at 4:18 pm00
I have a storage container/mud room at the camp and am looking to possibly put a gun safe in there. I have permanent power but the container isn't climate controlled. Has anyone had any success with dehumidifiers in gun safes or anything like that?
I'm afraid that with the humidity the gun safe will just turn into a rust chamber.

I have a run of the mill 64 gun safe with a goldenrod (18” I think) in a bedroom that evidently is humid as crap. I figured the goldenrod would eliminate all the humidity alone, but I put one of the damp rid containers in it just to check and it collected way more water than I ever thought would be in the safe. Maybe I should’ve got the longest goldrod available? I’ll always keep one if the moisture collectors in it from now on, no matter what. They absolutely work.
You’re stuff should be fine if you put them up clean and oiled up like normal, but I don’t trust mine as a “put it up and forget about it” safe.
Good thing that I enjoy cleaning and fingering my weapons, so to speak.

I'm going to wind up mounting the gun cabinet in the attic and I'm thinking that aggressive oil wipe downs and damp rid is going to be my best defense.
Most safes have holes in the bottom so you can run power to the inside. I'd stick me a tiny humidifier in there, for sure. I'd also look at putting the guns that are least used in bags like these:

my safe is bolted to the slab in my garage. have a golden rod in there and a bucket of damp rid. change the damp rid every couple months, and always clean & oil the guns before putting up. No problems over 5yrs so far.

Mine also lives in my garage with occasional damp rid. I don’t change it as often as I should. Always put them up lightly oiled. No issues.

I would be concerned of the heat in a container. It’s nothing for those to get 135-140F in direct sunlight. We put roof turbine vents on ours but not sure I’d want to store a gun safe in their.
