Trying to help an older relative who can no longer afford Spectrum's latest price increase and wants to cut the cord. She's going to get a firestick and one of the streaming services, but here's the question: in looking at Sling, Hulu, YoutubeTV, none of them carry the old TV show channels she likes - MeTV, Antenna TV, or Decades TV. Is there any way for her to get at least one of those channels without having cable? TIA

I have an OTA antenna installed in my attic and get all of those stations for free. I get about 60 channels. Not sure of your relative's setup though. I have a very tall attic. I used to have Cox in which the main line ran into the attic, then a splitter sent the feed to each room in the house. I disconnected the Cox line and connected the antenna to the splitter. Now I get crystal clear OTA channels in every room.

Thanks. The attic is not tall and the other issue is we live in Hammond and when I’ve tried an antenna at my house in the past, it picked up maybe two channels but willing to try again.

You have to make sure the antenna is facing in the direction of the TV stations broadcast antennas. A lot of the New Orleans stations are in the New Orleans east area. This is a good link to use. LINK

Who has the time/patience to 'weed' thru all of these half-baked, duplicitous options/deals/cord-cutting exercises in terror/frustration ? Just purchased/received a simple Firestick via Amazon and just in the initial 'set-up' process...I'm directed to call a different # who then claims {in a boiler-room noise, heavy accent...that 'my account' has been compromised by at least 20 people and I should 're-establish' my identity by setting up a dummy acct. via a 'new' card !!!! Told them to go to hell...back to cable. Just too much disinformation and damn internet spammers/thieves !

Just asking because guide is 5 years old, sans cable/satellite there is no option for “truly” live (no delay) sports? I plan on getting a good antenna for ABC/CBS/Fox games but I’m dreading the ESPN/SECN lagged options.

It’s really not that bad

Just put down the phone while you’re watching a football game and you won’t even notice

Just moved to a new house in Zachary that has a thermal barrier on roof. Tried installing my antenna from old house in attic but not getting signal through barrier. Can't install external antenna due to HOA. Are there any other options for OTA?

You 100% CAN install your antenna on the roof of your house.

The Telecommunications Act of 1996, Over the Air Reception Devices Rule, outlawed all restrictions on antennas on your own property subject to the following:

1. You can put it anywhere it does not encroach on common property or an easement.

2. The antenna must be designed for local reception of signals intended for the local audience, not for distant signals intended for a different geographic audience.

3. The top of your antenna can go as high as you require, although some jurisdictions require permitting if you exceed more than 12' in height above the top line ridge of your house or the top of your chimney, whichever is greater in height.

The HOA cannot tell you where to put it, cannot prevent you from installing it and cannot fine you for it. It is a violation of federal law if they try to. They can, however regulate it if it is being installed in an unsafe manner or as it might impact a building designated as "historical" by a government agency.

You should send them a letter, along with a copy of the law.

Which streaming service to choose?

Youtube TV seems like the best option, anyone have Hulu Live or ATT live? Anyone have experience with all 3?

Can't help you there, bud. My wife was like me, "Put it where it pisses off the HOA board the very most." I notified the board of my intent to put up an antenna and advised them of the law, telling them that the CC&Rs were in violation of federal law. Even then they threatened to fine me if I put it up before they had the HOA's attorney review it. I told them "No, the law says that would cause an undue delay and is against the law. If you want to fine me you could find yourselves dealing with this in federal court." They relented.

Several neighbors wanted to do it too and asked me how I got away with it. This was when HDTV first started being broadcast over the air and you couldn't get it by cable or by streaming. Eventually, my neighbor behind me, an attorney, forced the board to remove the restriction from the CC&Rs since it violated federal law.

Are ESPN+/SECNETWORK+ events (Vandy game this weekend, for example) also shown on The SECN alternates? Some might be surprised to not be able to find their team.

This seems to imply they need ESPN app and to either sign in to their cable provider or have an ESPN+ account:

quote:

Q: How many SEC games will be on ESPN+? A: Starting in 2021-22, select non-conference football and basketball games will appear on ESPN+. Q: What is the difference between SEC Network+ and ESPN+? A: SEC Network+ is complementary to SEC Network offering exclusive digital events. It is accessible with your TV provider credentials and is available via the ESPN APP on smartphones, tablets, connected streaming devices or espn.com/watch.

quote:

Q: If a game is airing on both SEC Network+ and ESPN+ simultaneously, where do I watch? A: Both streams will be available in the ESPN App. SEC Network authenticated subscribers of AT&T TV, Cox, DIRECTV, DISH Network, fuboTV, Hulu + Live TV, Optimum, Sling TV, Spectrum TV, Suddenlink, Verizon Fios, Xfinity TV, YouTube TV, Vidgo, members of the NCTC, as well as those with access to SEC Network through TV connected devices, can watch the game via SEC Network+. If you do not have access to SEC Network, you can access games via a subscription to ESPN+.

I was a YT TV customer for 4 years but I signed up with AT&T Gigabit Fiber at my new apartment in TX and decided to take the bundle with DirecTV Stream

Not even a month in I am already cancelling DirecTV Stream and going back to YouTube TV. Issues I faced:

-Lots of buffering and low resolution pixelated images despite me having the fastest AT&T Fiber service tier there is. I can count on one hand the number of times my YT TV service buffered in the 4 years I had it. Happened dozens of times.

-Broadcasts are behind. I was switching between the LSU and Georgia games the other night and each time I switched games the broadcast would be 10-15 minutes behind. I flipped back to the LSU game and it was still on the 1st drive of the game while the actual game was at the end of the 1st quarter. This happened all day this past Saturday during college football and was super annoying. Also tried to watch Dodgeball on Comedy Central this past Sunday and it was still showing The Office, which aired an hour earlier.

-Always makes me log in, it wouldn't save my credentials. Which is a pain of the arse on a TV remote especially when you need complex passwords. I never had to re-log in once for YouTube TV
