Cullman, AL was openly racist decades ago. They even had a sign that said something like "no blacks after sundown." It was very similar to how people on here are describing Vidor, TX.

As for my personal experience, I've never met a KKK member. But I have met racist old people, including in my family. I had a great-grandma who was born and raised in central Georgia. She grew up on a big farm and her ancestors were slave owners. The county she was raised in is actually named after her family. (Her maiden name is the same as the county).

She sounded like Scarlett O'Hara when she talked. She had that very antiquated upper class "Gawga" accent that doesn't exist anymore. Anyway, she was very racist, but not hateful in the "go lynch them" type of way. She just refused to associate with them.

We learned this when she got put in a nursing home. The nurses said she was always making comments to the black tenants, telling them to "stick with your kind." She refused to eat lunch if a black person was at her table. She always asked the nurses why things weren't segregated. The nurses explained it wasn't the 20's anymore and my great-grandmother said when she was raised blacks and whites didn't mix very much.

Driving back from Houston years ago I saw a gathering of KKK members in front of the Brookshires Bros. store in Cleveland, Texas.

They waved, I waved back.
