Building Pier Dock is it viable on the northshore?

A lot of people I've known when living in Alabama have built decks simply using pier blocks. I know the soil and water levels are completely different here though.
My assumption is the soil is too soft and the deck will sink a lot over 10-15 years and I should instead put PT posts in concrete or use sonotubes.
Any feedback?

I don’t know how big we are talking but seems like it would be easy enough to shim with a jack of the savings warrant the effort.
