So me and 3 of my friends from freshman year rented a house in a cottage complex with a random roommate our Sophomore year. The random moved out and my friend moved into a different house. We had a legitimate 27-year old crackhead move in along with another random roommate move in over the past 7 months. In December (the first month with 5 living in the house again) our overages on utilities were 70 bucks each. The problem is that the 3 original tenants weren’t there all month. So the crackhead and new guy somehow went over by 350 bucks in a 5-person house while we were gone when we’ve never had an overage before. Please advise us what to do because I think it’ll just be worse next month and we’re too young to know what the hell to do. Also the crackhead keeps giving our address to people he’s “beefing” with online and I think there’s going to be violence here. This place is the most popular student housing location in Tuscaloosa but allows non-students.

ETA: Thank for any advice because I just don’t know what the hell to do. I know this may seem stupid on this board. Also, yes, violence may be an option

Yeah it’s about time man. I just can’t really find a new place or get bailed out with how my dad is doing rn. We do have a 3-2 advantage though

All you can do is have everyone sit down and lay out the situation. Try and figure out what could be causing the overages and come to a civil agreement. Any type of hostility or accusatory tones will only make things worse. Try to stay calm. Unfortunately, you are kind of stuck with the roommate unless you plan to move out.

In the grand scheme of things $70 is nothing even if you have to pay it for a year every month. Don’t go getting arrested or do something stupid that will jeopardize your career or student eligibility down the road.

Living with 4 other people is going to be a shitshow ALWAYS. I would also never move in with someone random. The less people you can live with the better.

If you have a legitimate crack head in your house, the least of your concern should be the utility bills.

Your stuff and everyone else’s stuff will be gone shortly, if it hasn’t already started disappearing.

Explain to the management that your random roommate is threatening you and doing other criminal activities and that you request to move into another apartment. My little brother had a random roommate one year and the guy had his friends come over and steal a tv and other stuff along with being a bunch of degenerates in general and after raising hell the management let them move out at no expense.

This x 1000!

I had the misfortune of living next door to one in ATL and that sumbitch kicked my back door in while I was at work. Get as far away from that dude as you can, Will.

Is this all utilities?

What are your normal utility bills like, and which are being overused?

Are you talking about this month I'm assuming? Its possible you have a water leak for example in a toilet, that can be $100 fairly easily and can be such a small leak its not noticeable.

If you have an electric heater that could add up if its super cold.

ETA: I mean at the end of the day its $80 each. I wouldn't get into a fight over that, but I'd make damn sure to prevent it from happening again.
