I'm surprised Texas isn't interviewing him - or at least reports haven't surfaced that he will.

It’s a relatively low paying job. Likewise, it’s difficult to recruit because of the academic standards. When Lou Holtz coach there,he convinced Beauchamp to lower the entrance standards for athletes. The quarterback out of Texas( Tony?)was the first prop 48 player in the history of ND. It was a huge deal at the time. Needless to say, they won the national championship two years or so later after us changing policies. I believe the change back shortly after Lou retired.

It is still a prestigious school for Catholics and people in the Midwest. It is kind of like Bama in the years between the Bear and Saban.

Maybe there's a message in recent history:

David Cutcliffe was hired by Notre Dame
This from his wiki
quote:

After his stint at Ole Miss, Cutcliffe was hired by head coach Charlie Weis as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at Notre Dame,[7] but health problems forced him to resign before his first season there.[8] In 2005, he underwent successful triple-bypass surgery to correct a 99-percent blocked artery

Heath Problems euphemism for a heart attack that almost killed him. Although it was obviously a long time build up, Notre Dame was where he was lucky to survive and get the _____ out of there.
