Looking to finally start reading the presidential biographies. What are y'all's recommendations for the best y'all have read for each president? Thanks in advance!

Chernov's Washington bio is great, but The Indispensable Man is my favorite.
McCullough' John Adams is obvious.
I also like Edmund Morris's Teddy Roosevelt series.

Not exactly biographies, but...
1920 The Year of the Six Presidents: David Pietrusza - Amazon.com
The same author has also written books on the presidential elections of 1932, 1948, and 1960, all of which are excellent.
Just finished a very similar book:
Just Plain Dick: Richard Nixon’s Checkers Speech and the “Rocking, Socking” Election of 1952
Highly recommended as well.
RIP

quote:I just read this fairly recently, and it's become on of my all time favorite history books. Not only is the wheeling and dealing at the nominating conventions fascinating, but the book is often laugh out loud funny -- surely a rare quality in history books, at least in my experience
The presidential election of 1920 was among history's most dramatic. Six once-and-future presidents-Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, and Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt-jockeyed for the White House. With voters choosing between Wilson's League of Nations and Harding's front-porch isolationism, the 1920 election shaped modern America. Women won the vote. Republicans outspent Democrats by 4 to 1, as voters witnessed the first extensive newsreel coverage, modern campaign advertising, and results broadcast on radio. America had become an urban nation: Automobiles, mass production, chain stores, and easy credit transformed the economy. 1920 paints a vivid portrait of America, beset by the Red Scare, jailed dissidents, Prohibition, smoke-filled rooms, bomb-throwing terrorists, and the Klan, gingerly crossing modernity's threshold.

Anything by David McCullough. He won Pulitizer Prizes for both Truman and John Adams.
Anything by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Her books on Lincoln, the Roosevelt's, and the Fitzgerald's and the Kennedy's are great. Team of Rivals and No Ordinary Time both won Pulitzers.
Edmund Morris' TR books are excellent but he screwed up on Reagan.

There is a series called "American Presidents Series". I read the one on Calvin Coolidge years ago and at the time I told myself that I want to eventually read each one.. It kind of slipped my mind so maybe I will work in another one soon..
Here is the link that has every book to the series.

Check out What it Takes. It discusses the 1988 primaries and is a fast paced, fascinating read.

McCullough's biography of Truman is my favorite presidential bio so far. His biography of Adams is also very good.
I just got Chernow's book on Grant. Not sure when I'll get to it, but it's on the shelf!

The author read numerous biographies on each President and has excellent reviews on them all. I use this blog before I purchase or read a President’s bio. Highly recommend!

Just an interesting footnote: John Tyler, the 10th President, has a grandson that's still alive and one just died a few months ago.
