The show is a work of fiction, but does show the effects of trying to make it big in world chess circles.

From what I gather the show is based on the book by the same name... and while fiction the book tracks very similar to Bobby Fisher with some details of the character also coming from the book author himself. And the character is female because Fisher famously thought women chess players were terrible

Really wish they would have elaborated more on that night in Paris prior to Borgov 2.
Would have liked to see how that morning scene unfolded.

I read the book yesterday.

She was eight when she arrived at the orphanage, 13 when adopted, nineteen when she beat Borgov. I’m guessing the series added in that two year subterfuge because the actress was better suited to aging from 15 to 21?

Excellent show! Nice pacing and "Beth" was mesmerizing. First series I've binged on Netflix.

Drug use alcohol and sex more palatable for an older character.

Finally finished the last 2 episodes last night.

What a supremely enjoyable TV show. Like many have noted, none of the generic storylines but I was still genuinely happy she won at the end.

I wouldn’t change a thing about this show. The characters, plot, set and setting, costumes, everything was perfect.

It did feel like a bit of a middle finger to Fischer, basically replacing him with a young girl. They danced around him quite a bit, especially the tease with her mother asking about "that Bobby guy - wait no, Benny. That Benny guy." They mentioned every player anyone had ever heard of up to that point in history, including Spassky, but never Fischer. He hated the joos and celebrated when America was attacked on 9/11, so I'm not surprised that this story, set right in the middle of his historic run, excludes him completely. I see that the book was written in 1983, well before Fischer's 1992 exile from America and his notorious radio interview on 9/11, but he'd been kind of a dick his entire adult life.

It was well produced, and the actress rocked every one of those Mad Men outfits, but I felt that it was a bit generic. Still good, though. I kinda got a Kamala vibe from the black chick when she said she was fricking the married white law partner to get ahead even though she was a "radical." Is that in the book?

I liked that Beth was a complex character, and they didn't try to fit her into one of the strong female lead tropes where she used sex/her body to awe men and get her way or make her into a controlling a-hole. It was refreshing to see her character have depth and deal with issues like loss, addiction, success, and disappointment in a real way, something that honestly film/TV usually does a terrible job of when it comes to female leads

To add to this, they did an excellent job of telling the story of a prodigy even if you set aside the female/male dynamic.

Probably the main theme of the show was about how her talents and demons were just different sides of the same coin. Usually with prodigy stories the conflict is between the protagonist’s gifts and whether or not they’ll step up to turn that into greatness (“She’s my queen, I don’t want it!”). I liked how Queen’s Gambit focused on the yin and yang of her personality.

I absolutely loved that scene. I may have shed a tear or two when she lost it in the car a few moments later.

That was my favorite sequence of the show. I thought it was excellent. It was sad and heartwarming at the same time.

She felt guilty about never paying him the $10 back but for him that was the last thing on his mind. She was upset that nobody was crying for him at the funeral but she didn’t cry at the funeral either. Then, the newspaper clippings reveal how much he cared about her and her journey, bringing into focus the reality of what she’d just lost.

And this happening while being confronted with her feelings of pain and suffering remembering the bad experiences growing up in the orphanage was perfect. During all of that shite, she developed a life changing relationship with a janitor and a tremendous bond with a person that gives her a shoulder to lean on when she’s weak as an adult.

Her ascension throughout the series was striking. She went from homely with the Prince Valiant haircut to beautiful. Loved her elegance and the outfits were gorgeous on her.
And when she was dancing to “Fever” I’ll have to admit that “it moved.”

Just finished the finale. Incredible show, probably the best I've seen this year. I agree with all the praise it's gotten in this thread, it was very well done.

One question I have: did Deardorff recognize her in her walkthrough of the orphanage and "you should be in chapel" was her nod to Beth? Or was it to show she was actually so beaten and disconnected from the girls that she didn't remember one of the girls that came up there?

I had a completely different take on that. I thought all of that was in Beth's mind, none of it actually happened. Wasn't the orphanage shut down because of the way they were handing out the drugs?

I'm on Ep 5 and I think this is the best thing Netflix has ever done. But I really enjoy chess so I could be biased.

I don’t think it was shut down. I think Dierdorf didn’t recognize her because her disconnect, like the other poster said, and likely because she’s drugged up after the fall she had

i'm thru 4 episodes (protip: do not start this series at 8pm on a sunday night...). i was riveted.

wonderful is an understatement, this is one of the best things i've ever watched. "lead actress" is putting it mildly, she's in damn near every scene and the entire story is told either from her perspective of with her in the spotlight. and i agree with the others that appreciated the lack of "abuse" of her character despite her hardships.

i'll finish it tonight

I think they knew how to shoot her look. It gave her an exotic and mysterious appeal. The show itself was fantastic and I hope it wins some awards
