We lived in Mt. Home, AR at one time. Yellville, AR was just west of us. That town is the home of "Turkey Trot", the event that spawned the WKRP show. For years, they would throw the birds off the top floor (Tallest building in town was two stories) and the participants would scramble to catch the birds. If you caught one, it was your potential dinner. Eventually, someone decided to throw them from a low flying plane (DUH).

The festival ran that way for several years, then PETA caught wind of the event and demonstrated. To address the PETA concerns, the Turkey Trot folks decided (DUH) to throw frozen turkey's from the plane. Several went through car roofs and hit unfortunate participants, so that didn;t work very well either, so they went back to live turkeys.

Eventually, PETA decided to turn the airplane pilot into FAA, for violating the distance above ground rules for pilots. To work around this, the pilot taped paper over his tail numbers. The battle may still be going on. I lost interest when we moved away.

For anyone interested in participating, you can look up Turkey Trot Yellville, AR on Google and learn all about it. If you have the beauty contest looks and interest, they do have a "Miss Turkey Legs" Pageant. Arkansas is a somewhat backward state, so I am pretty sure Men identifying as women are not welcome in the Miss Turley Legs Pageant, unless your legs are beauty pageant nice.

Not trying to indicate I have any problems with that.

I thought of this immediately when I read that 87,000 frozen turkeys exploded in the fire at Greenberg Smoked Turkeys a couple of weeks ago.
