Anyone who puts opiate and undertow at the bottom clearly are millenials who know nothing about tool.

I'm 46 years old. Been listening to Tool since Opiate was released. Loved them from the jump... but their later stuff is so advanced, conceptually and musically. Hard to touch. Their earlier stuff was when they were still finding their legs. However, I think Aenima is the perfect middle ground. You still have the faster, more rocking aspect of their earliest stuff with just enough of the prog aspects of their stuff since Lateralus.

undertow at the bottom

I had it near the bottom of my list, but that doesn't mean I don't think it is an incredible fricking album (FTR - it's an incredible fricking album).

I think it is their most consistent album, track-for-track.

It just does not have even remotely the high points of any of the later albums, IMHO. I do still have it above 10k Days (an album that I didn't get it at first, was slow to warm to and it gets better every single listen).

I won’t go as far as to agree with you on FI being *bad*, but I agree that it’s a little overindulgent.

Let the down votes rain! Fear Inoculum was not very good. I really tried to enjoy it, but it’s boring.

You are not wrong. It is technical perfection with repetitive cords and progressions from previous albums and too few interesting moments. If this were the first tool record I ever heard I would like it more. The problem is they sound redundant and got too caught up in the technical to remember that music needs to be entertaining as well
Fear IS the first album I ever listed to by Tool and I find all the others albums which I listened to after Fear led up to what is Fear. There are indeed some great songs on all the older albums and they all sound more raw (the screaming!) and primitive (the beat!)to me. Fear is a highly technical masterpiece to me

For me, Fear is Danny Carey's album. It firmly establishes him as the best drummer in current rock/prog/heavy music... arguably the best of all time.
