Is a timeout worth 5 yards?

I've never understood calling timeout to avoid a delay of game, especially on 1st down

Depends on the situation really but I agree that wasting a TO on 1st down, especially in the second half, is usually not a good call.

You only get a limited number of possessions a game. Penalties kill drives.

I get this, but I would argue most 1st downs end greater than 5 yards from the line to gain

5 yard penalties can be drive killers. First and 10, probably not. 2nd and 7? Damn straight I'd call a timeout. 3rd and anything less than 7 I'd call a timeout too.

I've always thought it was crazy for coaches to call time out on an extra point where, as the defending team, you only have 10 players on the field.
