Do transfers count toward the 25 signings cap?

It seems like we would never be able to get back to a full capacity unless we add more than 25 players each year. If we sign 25 high schoolers this year, can we add 10 transfers since we are way under the number of scholarship players allowed on a team?

Over time it will come back up as you continue to sign 25 man classes
If you keep all players in class which never happpens that puts you back at 100
You just need less attrition

With transfers maybe they will grant some relief like they did for baseball

It may seem counterintuitive, but the key is to sign some upperclassman. If you are just bringing in freshmen there will be too much transfer attrition.

This^^ just look at LSU’s class last year. Cox, Shanahan and Darren Evans all count towards the 25.

I took the “No” answer as referring to the question “can we add 10 transfers to get numbers back up”

You are only allowed to bring in 25 new scholarship players into the program whether those players are high school signees or transfers.

You can award scholarships to walk ons that have been with the program without them counting towards the 25.

Joe Burrow was the 25th newcomer when he signed in 2018. Had LSU signed Pat Surtain (or the other corner that I can’t remember his name LSU missed on because Surtain told them too late) in that signing class he would not have been able to come.

25 is a hard cap. Everyone counts.

The NCAA needs to add an exception to this rule. A program should be able to add an additional transfer, grad transfer, or FBS transfer to replace any scholarship player who leaves via grad transfer or the portal. This would allow programs to offset multiple defections through the portal and prevent falling well below the 85 limit like we will the next few years.
