Recruiting for Modern Football
Posted by IowaCityTigerFan on 11/6/20 at 10:38 am53
Modern Football requires you to have:
4 down lineman.
1 sideline to sideline linebacker.
2 hybrids.
1 deep safety.
3 cover corners.
I feel like this class, the previous class and next years class are really close to meeting all of those needs.
The fortunate thing about this year is that we know what doesn’t work and who isn’t going to work.
We have a personnel problem and a coaching problem.
I’m in full agreement that our DC isn’t the man for the job. Sacks aren’t the name of the game. Field goals attempts is what wins today.
I feel encourage by our freshman, I’m liking the class. And am hoping it rounds out how it’s being projected. Most of our current sophomores and juniors need not see the field next year.
It’s time to see White and Sampah. Along with Toles, Guillory(healthy) and Roy all receiving starter minutes. The goal now is not to win, but evaluate.
What do we need and where can we find it?

Modern football definitely doesn’t require 4 down linemen lol.
We literally won a championship 10 months ago playing with 3 down linemen. Most “modern” schemes only use 3 down lineman.
Edit: I didn't think I would need to clarify the fact that chaisson was not a "down lineman". The fact that he was a pass-rusher does not make him a down-lineman, who is someone who plays exclusively with their hand in the ground. Chaisson didn't do that. A 3-4 uses 3 down linemen, an OLB/EDGE (chaisson, for us), 2 ILB, and another OLB. Chaisson wasn't a down lineman.

You’re right, Chaisson never rushed.. he sat in coverage on EVERY play.
Thanks for missing the point to prove whatever point you were trying to make...

This isn’t true. You still need to be able to get after the QB. You just can’t be horrendous against the run. You can def have both. Also our players don’t know their assignments clearly. Especially the back 7.
I do agree that it is a coaching and personnel problem. Mostly coaching though. We have players that were very good last year and now all of a sudden they are shite ala Stevens, Clark, Logan, Farrel, Hampton, Flott to name a few.

I actually agree with this. You need versatile players in today's game. We are missing that Centerfield S type that we have been blessed with in the past, a MLB who can run with any RB/Slot WR, and DE's who can get Qb pressure and defend the run. I think this next class will have the DL good to go but I am still worried about LB.

Jeez man. He's just saying that schematically, it matters whether or not you have a 3-4 or a 4-3 even if most of the time you're in nickel. The responsibilities are different for the entire front 7.

Are you an idiot? Rushing the passer does not make you a down lineman. Putting your hand in the dirt makes you a down lineman. On most plays last year, Chaisson was a stand-up rusher. That is not a "down lineman" as you said. A 3-4 utilizes 3 down linemen and 4 LBs. That's what we ran last year.
It's fricking bananas that you're getting upvoted when you don't even know what you're talking about.

Toles got in the last game. I am sure you remember the play. Schwartz went 91yds by him while he was standing still...
Actually, I expect him to do better in the future but it was a great example of guys who might not be ready for the speed of the game when their number is called.

Guillory(healthy)
Anybody hear if he is good to go yet?

You need to be able to cover, and to get to the QB with 4:
Dominant DL and good corners.

Modern football is like old school football. You need a bunch of o-lineman or you will suck. Period

On top of all that LSU was not in it's base 3-4 very often. My guess is tigers played nickel at least 75% of the time. It was either 4-2-5 with chiasson hand in the dirt or 3-3-5 with chiasson standing up. Does it really matter one way or the other. Either way a LB left the field.
That's not counting the tigers specific pass rush "D" whatever it was called with one DLineman and three edge rushers.
