I just started playing. The fixed camera angles and controls make the game extremely awkward and unweildy by modern standards. Does the game get better? Is it worth playing?

Better from the standpoint you're talking about? No. The early resident evil games are not control friendly by any of today's standards.
They are great games though and yes you will get used to the controls if you keep playing

^ This. They’re very unwieldy by 21st century standards but it’s worth it.

Not sure what you mean by will the game get better, I mean the controls are what they are. The game itself is great.
I'm strongly of the opinion you'll get used to them after a little while. It's not really an action game at all, so quick, precise movements are never really demanded of the player.
There's also a school of thought that the awkward controls of the old school RE games make them scarier and I tend to agree with that. It wasn't done purposefully as some people claim, but it was just sort of a happy coincidence.

Did they include the quick turn command in the remake? That made things better in code veronica

i played this for the first time a year ago on xbone and decided to play on hard. it took me at least 10 tries to kill the first zombie with just that knife they give you (pretty sure you get a gun on regular mode) but i stuck with it and got good. i never finished it as i got busy with moving at the time and just never went back to it once i got settled but i was really enjoying it

The controls and camera doesnt improve. It is what it is..but the controls are better than they were in 1996 so I didnt mind them. The inventory system was cumbersome. Constantly back tracking to item storage boxes to move stuff around got old fast. I did enjoy playing through it though for the nostalgia factor more than anything. I'd love to see a full blown remake like they did for Resident Evil 2,3 or some return to the Spenser Mansion would be awesome.

I loved this game back in the good ole days, was it on 64? I forget.
How much is it? I may get used to the controllers...

That's RE4, was never on N64, was originally on GameCube and had a PS2 release slightly later as well.
It's been ported to a gazillion other platforms over the years since.

Resident Evil 2 was ported to the N64, Dreamcast and Gamecube, but originally debuted on the Playstation. I got the N64 port back when it came out. Minimal load times compared to playstation and you could do some silly stuff like change the color of blood from red to blue or green, but holy hell... the cinematics were turrible
