They very well may keep the federal government in check, and we have seen that with covid, but who the president is affects everyone equally, and it’s a national election. Whoever more people want should be the president, just my opinion, y’all are way too hardcore, give politics a damn break, you literally have no control over anything one way or the other.

But ok, we will go with your premise but only after we break up in to 50 countries and each country uses their own popular vote to elect their own president. That's the only way I would go along with popular vote because I'll be damned if I let the people of California decide what's best for me in Louisiana. They have no idea and simply don't care what is best for my state.

The presidency is not a populist position. It's an element of cooperation between states, not people. The states elect the president as voted on by the people of each state. Otherwise, a single city of likeminded, narrow interest would be able to nullify the vote of multiple whole states. A NYC metro voting bloc would have more votes than LA, AR, MS, and AL combined.
If you think it works for POTUS then why have Congress at all? Why not just have the populace vote for everything from constitutional amendments to SC appointments? If you can think of anything wrong with that, then the same philosophy applies to the office of Pressident.

Pople that ask questions like this are painfully short-sighted. The US didn't become a superpower by being "like everybody else". No one successful does. Had Bill Gates been "like everybody else" he would have stayed in college and gone to work at IBM.

That is patently false.
Just because a state breaks hard in one direction doesn’t mean the votes have less value. It was precisely the value of those votes that caused the state to break in that direction.

More people live in rural areas than urban areas in the US. So please explain how a popular vote would disenfranchise people in rural areas. Outside of candidates not campaigning in those areas, which in 2020 with the internet, it doesn’t really matter where people campaign anyway, and as it stands they only campaign in a handful of states anyway.

Also people keep saying things like “do you want people in California to decide how much tax you pay” and my answer is no, I think there should be more power left up to the states overall, but a national presidential election should be by popular vote.
