Looking to get a new iphone. I see one of the big new features with the 12 is 5G. I'm in BR 99% of the time. Pardon my ignorance, but is 5G in BR with Verizon? If not, anytime soon? Is 5G that big of a deal for casual use? I'm on wifi most of the time anyway.
Save some bucks and just get an 11? What say you?

You can pull up a provider map and see where coverage is / when it will be rolled out.

Save a few bucks and get the 11? No.

If you’re having to get a new phone now you can get a 12 / 12 mini and have most features that are in the pro.

You’d be too far behind if you get an 11 now. Not worth the savings.

Save a lot of bucks and get the SE. Wait on the 14 pro.

Is the 12 a bug change, aside from 5G? In other words is this an in between year for Apple or since they are on a different number (12) this marks the big change and next year will be the incremental change?

12 is an evolution of the 11 which was an evolution of the X. I haven’t seen any real upgrades since the X.

I have the Xs. Battery life is starting to deteriorate but other than that, I am not sure I see the value in upgrading. 5G is really the only real enticement.

Low ban 5G is in some areas of BR but the high speed higher bands aren't anywhere in LA yet. It will be later in 2021 from what I hear for BR and NO.

Low Band is in the 700MGhtz spectrum and is almost the same as 4G LTE. In some places you can get 150-200MB per sec throughput. You won't notice much difference from your 4G LTE phone unless you are closer to the tower.

The problem is going to be the tower infrastructure connection. There is only so much bandwidth on the connected lines to the tower sites.

I saw a decent battery improvement from XS to 11pro.

The main difference with the 12 lineup is that a lot of the pro like features are in the 12 / 12 mini so you can save costs and get a lot of bang for your buck there.

5g isn’t the same as 5g ultra wideband.

I think it's time to lower your expectations about Verizon's "5G UWB" and it's future availability. The signal doesn't go very far and it can't penetrate most buildings. Considering most cellular usage happens indoors, Verizon's mmWave spectrum will be useless for most wireless users. Even if you have a node in front of your house, there is a good chance the signal won't go indoors.

"UWB" focus will sooner or later shift from mobile users to WISP home usage. For now, it's just a marketing gimmick. The only carrier that has the spectrum to offer wide-band 5G (I'm talking about 100 MHz wide NR carrier) with decent coverage is T-Mobile. Verizon and At&t will have to wait for the 3.5-3.7 GHz band to clear up (and even then, they'll be at a coverage disadvantage over T-Mobile)

The iPhone 12 versions won't be able to do NR carrier aggregation. That feature is supposed to roll out on the next Qualcomm modems (MediaTek beat them to the punch, surprisingly).

As of right now, there is no real reason to switch. Every carrier is still expanding their LTE coverage and will be using DSS to continue providing LTE service into the future. Personally, I would wait until support for future bands is added to phones. The 3.5-3.7 GHz band is supposed to be auctioned in the near future (you can bet Verizon and at&t will go all-in).

So if you had to buy an iphone in the next couple of months, wanted to get the most bang for your buck and planned on keeping for 4 years roughly which one would you buy?

Sure, but it can still do ENDC which certain configurations are getting upwards of 2Gbps OTA.

I’m waiting on the 6.7” 12 max pro releasing in November. The bigger screen is the biggest difference. 5G is pointless in 2020. The camera is better with LIDAR too. Going with the blue one. Or white. Idk.

I'll say this; if you need a phone, then buy a phone.

But if you're only looking to upgrade because you want 5G, then I suggest you wait. Verizon and AT&T are still waiting on the C-Band auction (which will become the backbone of their 5G network). Certain parts of the country could see that band get cleared for 5G as early as late 2021 (which means the next iphone could get future-proofed to be compatible with it).

For starters, the entire point of 5G was to provide low latency. Using LTE as an anchor band kind of defeats the whole purpose of "5G".

Second, these "1+ Gbps" tests are more of a "proof of concept" than actual real world experience. Verizon does it with mmWave, but those bands have a hard time penetrating walls. Also, every carrier has made it clear that they want to move to stand alone 5G as soon as possible. T-Mobile will be doing it with newly acquired spectrum (n71+n41) while At&t + Verizon plan on doing DSS on current LTE spectrum.

I've been using the Verizon 5G on my S20+ and I'll say the speed is about double LTE when I ran some speed tests when they activated it. In terms of coverage and strength it seems identical to LTE. (edit: I'm referring to whatever Verizon is touting as 5G, not mmWave which is only available in a small area in Columbus)

BTW I am salty though that I've had a phone for months that is 5G capable but Verizon just never pushed an update out to let me use it until the fricking iPhone announced they could use it?

What if I told you that you were wrong and were getting 1.5 Gbps atm with Band2_Band66_n41 ENDC. Which is actually really low considering I can get 2.2 in the lab.

There are three configurations being deployed at the moment.

Macro n71
Shroud n41 with L1900 and 2100 NSA / SA / Concurrent

All of these configurations with last FOA are getting over 1Gbps OTA where backhaul is not limited.
