Tried searching but nothing much came up.

Looking for a quick family getaway leading up to the Christmas holidays - late November. We have 3 young kids to tow around, so something easy and drive-able, within 3-5 hours of the nola area. I know Natchitoches does the lights and a big lead up to Christmas; never been myself and really know nothing about the city and surrounding area. Thought it might be a fun weekend trip to stay a couple nights with the fam, go to a Christmas tree farm around the area to pick out a tree and drive back.

What say the travel board - worth the trip? Alternate ideas? Locals with suggestions on where to stay and where to eat?

My wife and I went a few years back. Although we did not have any kids there were a lot of those around. Two things we learned: 1. hotel rooms go early. We were driving from Dallas and the closest we found was near the Shreveport airport. We started trying to book in September. 2. Parking is ridiculous. We arrived about 9 am and had to park at the university and walk to town.

Definitely. But we don’t have to do it again.

Wife and I went last year and really enjoyed it. Do not stay in a hotel. Book a bed and breakfast if possible. May be tougher to do since y'all have three kids. Possibly AirBNB. Kids will love all the lights and festivities at night. We did a boat tour down the river that ends with them parking in the middle of the river for a prime view of the fireworks. Name of the company is Cane River Boat Tours and the name of the boat is the Cane River Queen. I'd definitely recommend the trip if y'all can find somewhere to stay this late and if there are no limitations due to COVID.

I’ve never been to the Festival. I went last year on the weekend after and I couldn’t have imagined being there for the Festival because it was busy enough the weekend after.

I'd say it's worth going especially with kids. Not too expensive either. Also have the Louisiana Sports History Museum around the festival grounds. I drug my wife through it and I really enjoyed it.

Yes it is worth going. But I would not stay more than one night.

My wife and I celebrated her birthday earlier this year staying at a bed & breakfast inn at Natchitoches for a weekend in early January. All the Christmas decorations and lights were still in place along the river; it was really neat. There are lots of shops and restaurants along the river to keep y'all entertained. Everything's within walking distance. It's a really cool small town with old school grocery stores and places to eat. The b&b was nice, a victorian home we had all to ourselves. Chicks love that sorta stuff.

I wouldn't stay longer than two nights; you can do everything in a weekend. The Steel Magnolias house is there, if your wife digs that movie.
