How about overstaying your welcome that destroyed CFB programs.

This is a good one. You're basically looking for legends who let the game pass them by but they were too revered to be fired for on field results. There aren't a lot of options besides Bowden and Brown like you already mentioned.

Joe Paterno was going down this road before the Sandusky stuff happened, but they still had some good teams near the end of his tenure.

Frank Beamer comes to mind. Once Tyrod Taylor left, their QB play went to shite and their offense became terrible.

Jeff Tedford had some very good teams at Cal but he stayed there for too long and they were bad by the time he was fired.

Nebraska always got a Top 5 ranking because they breezed through the old Big8 and only had to beat Oklahoma.

Colorado was great for a while in addition to Oklahoma. Nebraska probably should've beaten FSU and won the first of three straight NCs after the 1994 Orange Bowl. Awful penalty bailed out the Noles

I still remember the emotions of that game. It was like I watched it last night. The refs putting 1 second back on the clock. Bowden soaked and confused. The Nebraska kicker then pushing that 45yd field goal wide left.

I cried. I was 16. Went on to Mizzou for college, but there is still a special place in my heart for the Huskers. Selfishly, it was great Mizzou and Nebraska went to separate conferences, so now I can pull for both.

Wrong on Bower. Fedora leaving destroyed the program.

Vince Gibson then Wally English instead of Lindy Infante for Larry Smith
Greg Davis for Mack Brown
Chris Scelfo instead of RR for Tommy Bowden

No kidding. That was Bowden’s first title, so both coaches had the so-called ‘monkey’ on their back. The kick was even close. I feel like this is one of the more underrated endings to a championship/bowl game. It’s not one that gets talked about a lot. If the kid makes the field goal, it would be an all-timer.

I think we'll look back on Art Briles being (rightfully) forced out of Baylor as the moment they stopped being a national threat.

They almost made the playoff last year, within a play or two. Now granted they probably would have gotten smoked in the playoff.

Colorado was great for like 4 years.

Then they were good to average throughout the rest of the 90's.

Oklahoma was down in the 90's. So it totally explains Nebraska's dominance of the Big8/12. They consistently got Top 5 rankings because of name and record due to Conference...and then consistently got speed taught to them in bowl games until the 90's.

They were always very good but never great because they weren't tested during the year and it seemed speed shocked them in the bowl games.

When Osborne lost the Natty to preseason unranked Miami in 1983 while Nebraska was #1 all year and had a 20-something game winning streak Osborne was still 6-4 in bowl games despite looking like the most dominant program in CFB...after that he continued to lose in the 80's...and his bowl record was something like 8-12 before the mid-90's.

The deal is Nebraska got a false sense of who they really were because of the mid-90's sellout and destroyed the program by firing a coach who was successful and did what Nebraska did best...run the option.

They did, but Georgia crushed them in the Sugar Bowl with a dogshit offense.

Then why did Bowden's last two teams struggle to make a bowl?

They didn't. In 2008, the Seminoles finished 9-4 and in 2009 they were bowl eligible before playing Florida to finish out the season. They beat a pretty good West Virginia team in their bowl game to send Bowden out a winner. The very next season, Jimbo Fisher's first, they won 10 games and appeared in the ACC Championship Game.

That's not what you would call "destroying a program." Bobby Bowden continued to coach well beyond his prime but he did not destroy Florida State. Jimbo Fisher did that.

FSU is really an intriguing case, Bowden's teams obviously struggled from the mid-2000s until his retirement, but didn't truly harm the program to the point where Fisher was able to pick up and win a championship within 4 years. Fisher's team completely fell off a cliff his last season, and may have continued to do so had he not bolted to A&M, but the Taggart hire is what did that program in IMO. Norvell might be able to stop the bleeding from Taggart, but that remains to be seen.
