Spinoff of FearlessFreep's post in the warped vinyl thread...

Is there an album more prized by hipster, ironic music fans for no apparent reason than Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart? Granted I'm no fan of "artistic" noise, but TMR just struck me as the furthest thing from genius and yet hipsters worldwide, and contrarians of course, think the album is the most amazing thing since sliced bread.

What am I missing with this album? People will say, "oh, it has 733 different beats all playing at one time"...well, as cool as they may or may not be, it sounds like shite. Surely I'm not alone in thinking this is overhyped crap.

I’m all for edgy avant-garde stuff, even if I don’t necessarily get into it myself - but Beefheart was just plain unlistenable.

Clear Spot is my favorite Captain Beefheart album. It's less avant garde than the earlier stuff, and much more listenable just for having good songs and not being weird for weird's sake.

I feel the same way about Frank Zappa's music.

I loved Lou Reed, but Metal Machine Music was just horrible. There has to be someone, somewhere, besides Lou that enjoyed that album, but I have yet to find them. Don't mean to hijack the thread.
