There's not many actors in the history of Hollywood that could go toe-to-toe against Wayne in a scene, but Holden is one of the very few exceptions. He had just as much presence as Wayne.

The whole "Section Hand" v. "Medicine Man" sequence is great. Holden was nowhere near the size of Wayne, but you believed he would fight him.

Both characters are walking contradictions. It's too bad the film goes off the rails at the end. It's not Ford's best effort as a director, but it's perhaps my favorite film of his because of the two leads blowing everyone else off the screen.

Very moving scene in this movie when the young Kaydets march off to battle to Bonnie Blue Flag starting at about the 1:25 mark.

Parts of that movie were filmed around Natchitoches, I believe. My dad was an extra. He had a horse and did some rodeos in the area. There was a call for cavalry extras so he drove down and signed up.
