I won't embarrass myself by listing my score, but we started league play yesterday and I played really well. I've made some adjustments I feel confident in and saw those adjustments lead to success on the scorecard.

Now, if history is any indicator, I'm so pumped up to get back out on the course that when I finally get there this Sunday morning, I'll be a fricking mess. Too amped up. Expectations too high. If I have any trouble on #1 I know my whole round will go to shite as I immediately lose faith in the adjustments.

What strategies do y'all use to temper expectations or remain confident in adjustments if they don't immediately stick?

It's.

Just.

A.

Game.

That's what I tell myself. I'm not on the Tour so, for me, it's just a game. Have fun.

Go watch the Golf Sidekick channel on YouTube. The guy speaks well to put the reality in perspective. All the videos are great. Planting feathers, growing birdies!

Three bad shots and one good one still makes par. I find it fun to hit those hard shots. It’s GOLF If I’m hitting low 5iron through two trees or trying an outside-in swing to get the ball to cut and feel like like I’m Bubba Watson is fun to me. I don’t have high success rate but my god when I get one. It’s a high I can’t explain.

I have Malvin to talk me off the ledge poor guy has to be a playing partner and a psychiatrist

OP, I went through the same thing earlier this year. Play shot to shot. Dial in on each swing. What are you doing and why? Pick the shot and hit it. Deal with whatever happens but commit to hitting your chosen shot.

One of the toughest things in golf to do. You don't have to play 18 holes on the first tee box, you just have to hit 1 tee shot. Go find it and hit it and try to do your best from there. If something works on the range it will work on the course. Don't start making adjustments just cause your first nervy swing of the day wasn't perfect.

Pack a few beers in your ice chest

Shotgun a beer every 3 holes to help you relax

Usually a shot of whiskey and a couple beers does the trick.

My goal is always try to make 3 birdies a round.

Not saying that I always meet my goal, but 3 birdies negate 3 bogeys and gives you 6 pars or a 1/3 of the holes, then you only have to manage 12 holes independently.

Small goals on the front and the back independent of each other can help you get around in pressure times. Call it course management or just tricking your brain, but confidence grows from achieving small goals.

Playing off the tee to a yardage that you are comfortable with in your second shot can ease the nerves as well.

Other than that, Staying away from caffeine and having sex before the round will help too.
