Social distancing in Arizona

I got away this past weekend and drove up to the Blue Ridge Reservoir outside of Happy Jack, AZ, about 2.5 hrs north of the Phoenix-area. The Blue Ridge Reservoir is widely-regarded as the best kayaking destination in Arizona. Kayaked all afternoon on Friday and I was on the water by 6:30 am Saturday, there were probably only 10 of us kayakers and fisherman at that hour and the water was like glass. A perfect getaway from all of the chaos. Sorry for the poor quality of some of the vids on my You Tube page, my GoPro battery went dead and I had to rely on my iPhone so holding it steady was a trick. Truly God's Country.

Strawberry/Pine is such a cool area. Did you ever dine at the Strawberry Lodge before it closed? Some of the best apple pie anywhere.

good stuff badger. i imagine blue ridge is a little less busy than places like woods canyon and willow springs lakes east of payson. those are typically a zoo in the summer.

Camped at Woods Canyon Lake the weekend of Memorial Day 2019 and it was a zoo and lots of screaming kids and one huge group partied loud late into the night (not a bad thing).
Last weekend wasn't bad at all but this weekend will be insanity, especially now that our governor partially shut the state down again yesterday. I stayed at the Blue Ridge Campground about 6 miles from the reservoir and it was fairly subdued. The Rock Crossing Campground 2 mi from the reservoir was closed last weekend due to Covid concerns and will be again this weekend. A woman with the forest service said expect huge crowds at the reservoir.

Any news locally about which direction the virus/quarantine is heading in AZ? I have seen several outlets naming that state as one of the new hot spots.

We have camped before by there. You know how there are a ton of dirt roads and you basically find a place to camp and set up? That’s where we have camped. Never at the actual campgrounds there. It’s nice cause you can find a spot and no one is by you so you have all this space to yourself and it’s so nice and quiet.
Went down to the reservoir one day and walked around the dam there. Jealous you got to kayak there.

Heading back up there this weekend but this time with a group of 12. Yes, last week I was told by the Mogollon Rim Ranger District that if all campgrounds were full I could set up camp anywhere along Forest Road 751, the gravel road leading the the reservoir off 87. We were able to find a camp spot at the Blue Ridge Campground and it worked out great but finding spots for 12 on a busy holiday weekend may be problematic so we have 751 as a backup. Some are bringing their dogs so it may be better to be more remote and away from families (and screaming kids). Next time you go up there check out Happy Jack Restaurant (connected to the Happy Jack Lodge & RV Park). Very cool place in the pines with good food and microbrews.
