The problem is....the plot made the first one what is was. So it is what we expected in the second. It is not what we got.

It wasn't a terrible story. People are just mad at the direction they took, which is fine.

I'm not crazy about the ending and I wish that the Abby/Ellie story intertwined a little more in sort of a cat and mouse way since they are living the same 3 days in the same area.

I get that they had to kill Joel. They had to move the story forward to tell a new story. Joel's story was told in the first game. Another full Joel/Ellie game would have felt like a rehash.

I’m not talking destined to fail in sales. Fail in some of our expectations. I’m sure sales were still good for The Last Skywalker.

As much as I loved the characters in the first one. And as much as I know how much people hate this one for the obvious reasons, I still think the story on this one is more real and believable. I actually love the game play and where the story is going. I think it’s 50/50 but the game is actually really good and I’m enjoying the hell out of it.

When I first started seeing all the review backlash on this game, I pretty much ignored it all until I just finished.

Jesus I’m glad I did. I enjoyed the hell out of the game.

Someone offered to let me play it on their own account so if I don't have to give money to cuckman, I'll give it a shot, will report back

I’m a big fan of taking the stealth approach in most games and feel like this and the first are really satisfying in that regard. Even if I got past an area I’d replay it a lot of times to try to do it better without being seen at all if possible.

I think a lot of folks got way overworked up about Abbys huge arms and Ellie/Dinas relationship.

I was aggravated I had to keep playing as Abby at first but, the suspense kept building to see how she’d end up back to the Ellie contribution. Liked the different weapons she got as well.

Having to battle Ellie was pretty cool.

The Ellie/Abby parallels were pretty cool too.
Ellie collected cards
Abby collected state quarters
Both father figures killed
Both lose friends at the hand of the other
They’re way more alike than they’d want to admit

Kinda touches on a theme Walking Dead explored a lot. In that had you followed the story from the other side’s perspective, it’s surprisingly easy to see the the original as the bad guy.

I don’t mind the ending. I thought the story was great. Get the feeling a lot of folks had their mind made up about this one long before playing it.

I didn’t like Last of Us Part I as much as most people. In part because I saw the ending coming miles away. Also in part because it just felt like a slower Uncharted game to me with a lot of moping around. But I do think the gameplay looks much more interesting this time around.

I 100% agree

It felt like a Slower clunkier Uncharted, and the ending sucked.

It just doesn’t make sense for a game like this not to have meaningful choices (i.e kill Abby or not). That’s why Dishonored is such an underrated series to me.

Also Joel’s death felt forced. First of all he wouldn’t give out his name like that. He also would have put up much more of a fight despite the surprise leg blast and would have taken some of them with him.

I mean it makes sense considering how Ellie wanted to give her life up nobly for all of man kind only to discover what Joel selfishly did to save her right? To save Abby means “ hey I understand why you killed Joel and I think I can right the wrong of all of this by saving your manly arse!”

The gameplay was great. Big improvement on the first game. It was a little relentlessly bleak and arguably a bit too long, but other than that I didn’t have any issues with it.

Clearly a GOTY contender although I might have enjoyed FF7R more just because of how bleak this one was.

I finished it but I still haven’t gotten into reading reviews. SPOILER - I can’t think of anything controversial other than Joel dying, but like someone else said, his story has been told, and it propels Ellie’s character forward, so it worked. Didn’t feel meaningless. My issue with the game is none of the new characters were very interesting and there were some parts that were flat out boring, however it had a satisfying ending. I hope the two cross paths in either DLC or future installments.

I appreciate your opinion and agree on some of it. There was a lot of extremely awesome gameplay segments and awe inspiring moments. The whole hospital sequence was an absolute blast specifically.

Yet, I really wasn’t a fan of some of the story telling. It felt first-drafty at times and used/overused multiple tropes. Characters showing up out of no where to save a character, multiple times where pregnancy is used to cause a sudden decision change, the use of dreams and flashbacks to drive character actions including at the game’s ultimate moment (although some of the flashbacks were my favorite parts). At times the story felt convoluted for the sake of being convoluted. I think they were trying to add depth and uniqueness to the game, but it just came off as contrived and severely affected the pacing. Still, it did not cause me to hate the game, I enjoyed it for what it was. It did however, frustrate me because you could see the clear potential the game had that it couldn’t quite reach.

This is where I respectfully disagree with your opinion. The ending was one of the most unsatisfying endings in a game I’ve ever seen.

-SPOILERS- (if it’s even necessary anymore)

To tell the story and lesson that they wanted to convey, I think they should’ve killed Abby. It would magnify the “was it all worth it?” question even more whenever Ellie returns to the farm and she’s lost everything. Think of how much more powerful the guitar scene would’ve been. It clarifies and focuses the message for the gamer to think about how Ellie went through everything to avenge Joel and lost her last connection to him in doing so. Instead, by sparing Abby, it muddies the waters because it causes a lot of people to think about a myriad of issues, including how Ellie went all that way and killed all those people for absolutely nothing. It blows my mind that ND had the courage to make so many other choices (Joel dying early and brutally, killing multiple characters, playing as Joel’s killer without complete backstory first, breaking down Ellie, etc.), but whenever it came to this final decision, they didn’t kill Abby (or even gave the player the choice to). My best guess is that, no matter what they say now about it, the main reason ND wanted to spare Abby is because they want her to be in the next game, even if it hurts the story of this one.

I've avoided spoilers and most things about this game. My impression from the few things I've read is that the game is underwhelming and story made some questionable decisions. Is there any reason I should play this ?

I've convinced myself to just not touch this game and live with the memory of the first game.

It’s completely about expectations. I enjoyed a lot of it, but it is incredibly frustrating at times because you can sense the immense potential that gets squandered. I’d say that if you have the time and liked part one’s gameplay, then play it, but I don’t think you are missing out on enough to justify rushing out to purchase it. The game isn’t as revolutionary as it wanted to be. Wait for it to go on sale or buy second hand. If you weren’t a fan of part one’s gameplay, but really connected to the story and characters, then just be prepared to be disappointed. If you still want to play it, my advice would be to lower your expectations and just try and compartmentalize it from the first one. Then you can enjoy it for what it is: a beautiful but flawed and sometimes frustrating game.

it's a fine game - not bad by any stretch. you just have this constant sense of "oh my god this could've been amazing" the entire time, which is pretty depressing. i love the gameplay, so if you enjoy the stealthy predator stuff, buy with confidence.

it doesnt nail its pacing like the first did. seems like a lot of sections go on for a bit too long. the game is probably 8-10 hours too long honestly.
