Nothing can stop that process other than a universally effective vaccine. Which we may never have and certainly will not have any time soon. The virus is not just going to vanish on its own because people wore masks and every restaurant and bar is forced to close.
I guess your solution is to just slow roll the spread over the next 18 months so that we can set the economy back 30 years? Everything cannot stay shut down forever. At some point the cost is too great, and the preventative measures are going to start causing far more problems than they solve.
The virus simply is not dangerous enough to the average person to keep 350 million people compliant with stay at home orders and mask/distancing policies indefinitely. Just the reality of it.

Opening up the economy isn't the reason. hospitals aren't inundated. there is one big reason he is failing to address. that aside from the fact testing has driven the positive rate up, all while driving the mortality rate down. This is a combination of taking his marching orders and trying to stay relevant. This is his superbowl and he pulling a cam newton
