I know there are plenty of threads on here about cord cutting. I’m in the process of building a new house and really want to just stream everything. So I talked the wife into trying it out for awhile at our current house before we cancel Dish. So today I signed up for Hulu, I have a Fire Stick and it has frozen 3 times in just 2 hours that we’ve been watching. Is there better devices? Would a Apple TV or Roku Ultra box solve this problem.

When you say frozen, is it a buffering issue or the system becomes unresponsive?

Set top boxes have better hardware than the “sticks”. So a fire cube, Apple TV, roku ultra, or Nvidia shield will be your best bet.

Hardwire your internet to these devices whenever possible. It’s way more consistent than wifi for streaming.

how old is your fire stick? the best devices imo are the nvidia shield TVs but they are over $100. Make sure your fire stick is plugged into power outlet if you wanna stick it out, ha

It just stops playing and the only buttons that do anything is the back button or the home button. It hasn’t done it again tonight, so we’ll see how it goes. I’m not going to hardwire anything in this house, just because I’m not running any cables just for a few more months that we will be here. In the new house I’ll have CAT6 drops in each room.

I have 3 Firetv boxes all hardwired and they work great. One has a laggy remote response but I put that one in my office where I rarely use it. I sometimes have to reboot the box if Netflix won't play, so next time if freezes, reboot and see if that helps.....reboot your WiFi router too. I just bout a WiFi extender for an outside security camera and now the WiFi out there is great. It was only $30 so you might consider that.

I bought the stick in 2017. Used it for about a year to stream movies and it started buffering and the wife got aggravated and didn't watch it anymore. I restored it to factory stetting and it is plugged in to a power outlet because that's one of the first problems we had when we got it.

Thanks for the nvidia shield info I'm going to look into those.

Honestly it sounds more like inconsistent WiFi than a device issue, but definitely upgrade the devices once you move if this will be your primary method of watching TV. Both the shield and fire cube can be hardwired in the new house.

Also keep in mind the shield uses android TV vs Amazon’s interface. It’s not that different, but my wife did bitch a bit when I switched it on her

Is the stick plugged directly into the TV or are you using the little extension they give you when you buy one? I had an issue with the stick getting hot behind a wall mounted TV and once I started using the extension it didn't give me a problem anymore.

Could be a Hulu issue as well. I had Hulu for almost 2 years and it gradually got worse. Started out once a month or so doing the same thing and then it got to the point of multiple times a week. Changed to YouTube TV with nothing else different and very very rarely have any issues

I use Apple TV and and if you have apple devices, that's a strong option. I'd also recommend the nVidia Shield TV ESPECIALLY if you have android phones and/or google home in your household.

As much as we are an apple family, the nVidia Shield TV is ABSOLUTELY legit and doesn't get much love compared to all the other devices.

The router is less that 15' away in the next room. I did use the little cable that came with the fire stick.

Well after reading and watching reviews this morning it was a toss up between Nividia and Apple TV. So I think we are going to try an Apple TV since we have already sold our soul to Apple on all our other devices. I just know the wife will bitch with the remote but hopefully I can just get her to use her phone as a remote if that ends up being easier.

This actually works well cause the remote is small as hell. Anytime my kids don't put it where it goes, I can just use my phone until they find it.

Isn't the Nvidia Shield like $300?

Hell would buy an Xbox or PS4 before I bought that.

Well I ran to the Apple store and picked up a Apple TV HD. I’m really liking the clean interface and the remote is pretty slick.

I use nothing but apple with exception to streaming. The Nvidia Shield is far and away the best streaming box on the market, and the difference is night and day. The remote is perfect, the response is lightening fast, and the upscaling is perfect.

If you are counting on streaming for your TV entertainment, invest in a shield.

Nvidia shield is the way to go. I’ve had Roku, Firesticks, Fire tv box and now the Shield. I switched awhile back to only streaming for all tv programs and the Shield is the best.
