How do I kill grass coming through mulch?

I have a TON of grass coming through my mulch in an area where I have newly planted pushes about 3ft apart...can I spray something that wont effect the bushes? Or do I need to do the newspaper thing?

Can you not spray with Roundup/Glysophate without getting on bushes?

May be late now but before you put more mulch down cut and use landscape fabric in areas where you don’t want grass or weeds. Use the good stuff, but this will eliminate 90% of any unwanted trash in the beds.

pull out what you can and smother the beds with wet newspaper and then keep it wet. It’ll do your plants a ton of good as it gets hotter and will eventually decompose. You can cover it up with pine straw or more mulch if you don’t like looking at it

Spray with roundup, get on a schedule of spraying every couple of weeks and soon you won't have to worry much about it.
Landscape fabric doesn't do anything.

Agree with this. At least in NC we have weeds that just grow on top of the fabric.
It’s impressive and frustrating at the same time.

Same here in N.O. for me. I only have 3 boxed in beds in my front yard and after tilling the ground and adding supplements to the soil I laid down landscape fabric then cut slits in it to plant the new plants, then mulched heavily.
It looked pretty good for a couple months than the weeds started showing up, mostly in the form of nut grass, then oxalis showed up.

Segment (sethoxodim) or Fusilade II

The graminicides are a good option as long as you don’t get on your turf since they will kill grass species. Diquat (Reward) also works on a variety of plants, but is non-selective and will cause rapid burn and likely kill your desirable plants if careless.
