Well it was released on PS1 when the PS2 (jp) was already out. Was glossed over.
Plus it didn't have the next game to VII hype.

Not to mention the hype for X was so big and all the marketing went into that as a first year PS2 game.

Those 3 games came out so close to each other.

VIII 02/1999
IX 07/2000
X 07/2001

First FF I played was 4. Then 6. Then I took a break until 8, and played 7 right after 8. I liked them both alot, likely because I wasn't trying to compare 8 to 7 after playing 7.

Then I played 9 and X and X2. Then skipped again until 13. I tried to get into 13 but wasn't big on the paradigm shift system so never really could. I loved everything about 15, in particular the postgame stuff like the return to Insomnia to fight all the way to Omega, and to complete the fishing list.

9 was a good game but I don't hold it in nearly the highest regard that tends to be the general consensus. The story was pretty good but the graphics/character modeling turned me off.

X2 was a good "closure" game, though the entire first half is pretty silly and I didn't care for the switch back to active battle. The dressphere system was very nice though, though limited. I enjoy the cloisters beneath Bevelle leading up to the Trema fight, and achieving 100% completion was a true challenge that felt very rewarding.

My favorite development system, by far, was the sphere grid in X. I had like 300-some-odd hours into erasing and repurposing nodes to max all characters out at 255/each stat. The monster arena took a lot of work to fully complete, and Nemesis is a sick fight. In the international version, the battles leading up to, and including Penance, were extremely challenging. All the character development and "endgame" content was incredibly deep and rewarding.

I can't say 8 was garbage of all the FF titles I've played. I loved the cards and junction system. The story was strange and convoluted at times, but good nonetheless. The Omega Weapon battle had my heart racing every time. One of the more difficult superboss fights in the entire series.

Of all the titles I actually beat, my least favorite was 9. It's the only one I didn't play through at least one more time. But again, that's more because the style just wasn't my taste.

You got hammered with downvotes, but I actually agree with most of your criticism.

I was a huge FF nerd when I was a kid having played and beaten FFIV-FFIX, and I'd say VIII is the weakest out of all of those for many of the reasons you mentioned.

It's still a good game overall, just not quite on the level of the other SNES/PSX FF titles.

I think most people took his title in the wrong way.
I would think the majority of people believe that 7 and 9 are better than 8. But people took it as he thinks the game is garbage.

Just my personal opinion but there are 4 tiers of FF games.

Gold

VI
IX

Great
IV
VII
X

Good
VIII
XII

Forgettable
The rest.

I emphasis the characters, world and stories more than anything else in these games though.

Same. Not to mention that broken arse disc 1 glitch where you were locked in the opening scene. Part of the reason it took me years to get to. Maybe I would have liked it more as a kid had it worked.

yeah, im not a huge fan of IX either. other than Vivi, nothing about that world or story grabbed me at all. VIII may have been incomprehensible nonsense, but i enjoyed the world and sci fi setting alot.

which is a shame, cause i liked how IX played alot.

but that gunblade tho.

other than Vivi,

To each his own.
The main reason I put 9 and 6 above all others is because of the cast of characters. The majority of them are fleshed out and have their own reasons for what they are. With the themes relating to the stories overall themes. With a big theme in 9 being death and the inevitability of it. Vivi certainty illustrates that the most.

The art sytle, edginess, or coolness (Gunblade, Buster Sword) is hardly what I look for in an RPG.
Although they do appeal to me. Just not as much.

no doubt, and IX is certainly a very well executed vision. just never found Zidane all that compelling, tho to be fair i havent completed the game since release. ive picked it up a handful of times since, most recently the remaster, but just get kinda bored with it after the first 6 hours or so.

Completely understandable. Especially if you played it young. He is a tailed human with daggers. A bit less appealing than the typical hero.

It is nice that the main is not a stoic a-hole like lots of the other games (7,8,13,15)

His search for who his family/idenity is and his need for companionship because of it was pretty well done. It's why he grouped with thieves and was a womanizer. Until eventually he finds out what he actually is.

Agreed.

I've never played any of the FF games beyond IX so I can't rate those. I also happen to have a soft spot for FFV because I loved the Job system in that game, and I'd never played with a system like that before in an RPG. The story, setting, and characters are admittedly pretty bland in V, though.

It kind of is, but it does have that late 90s Squaresoft charm that the modern FFs lack.

IX is definitely my favorite of that era. Stellar music, I love the characters (where are my Steiner stans?) and it just made sense. The remake with several quality-of-life improvements really helps.

I've been playing Dragon Quest XI on Switch, which makes me appreciate how this series manages to do so much more with less. DQ VIII is maybe my favorite JRPG of all time, and this one seems to be that amped up. And the ability to play it on handheld is a dream for JRPGS.
