Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s move to allow businesses to reopen almost three weeks ago, widely ridiculed by public-health officials, has so far not resulted in a surge of hospitalizations or deaths. That’s caught the attention of economists. Some Wall Street economists say a continued decline in serious illnesses suggests Georgia’s reopening may encourage other states to ease restrictions and lead to an eventual resumption in economic activity in the U.S.

“Georgia is a bellwether mainly because the reopening has been so aggressive,” said Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Amherst Pierpont Securities LLC, who cited in a research note Wednesday an almost 20% drop in Georgia’s Covid-19 patients in the past week or so. “The other aggressive states, like Florida and Texas, are still opening up more slowly,” Stanley said in an interview. “So if Georgia is successful then, in theory, no one is going too fast -- there should be a strong presumption that reopenings everywhere else should be successful.”

Sorry...posted too quickly.

This sort of news should be one of THE most important stories as it is extremely instructive.

Praise to the Georgia governor for being one of the first ones over the wall.

Last ones to shelter and first ones to open.

You have to watch the narrative, though. Reopening early will lead to increased cases at some point; that is inevitable. However, assuming they don’t overwhelm the system, the story should be that opening is the right thing to do.

By focusing on declining cases, the door is open to claim we need to “shut it down” the second cases rise - which is not the approach we should take.

Absolutely agree. You are already seeing media stories harping on any increase in "cases" in places like Texas. So what? We should expect more cases when we open. Staying shut down is solving nothing at this point.

If cases really don't go up, that's great. I will fully admit that I was wrong in predicting that they would.

Cases will go up. But that’s expected. It’s the hospitalizations that we need to watch.

Talking with physicians on front line today, they are getting a good protocol on this. Their words to me, “There is absolutely no reason to not go back to normal. Older, vulnerable should be careful, but the rest is a bogus political hoax.”

As long as those with two or more comorbidities who are over 65 are careful to protect themselves, any second wave will be a toothless one and herd immunity will advance toward eliminating the Wuhan virus.

Put a testing shield around the nursing homes not the healthy people.

This will PISS OFF progressives. If we open up too soon, the economy could be in recovery mode by the election.
