League and Union kick the can down the road on changing the CBA

Video clip at the link. A Pandemic allows the NBA to renegotiate the CBA if they want to. They have agreed to push that option out until September. The big concern is that fans in the arena account for 40% of league revenue. If they have to open next season without fans they'll need to make some changes to the CBA.

OK, this could get interesting.

All the Lebron / Maverick Carter horse shite pissed off a lot of people but we kept hearing that the next CBA wouldn’t be done until after LeBron retired, so they wouldn’t do anything about players having a financial interest in representing other players.

That may no longer be the case.

You don't want the possibility of a lockout/strike to be added on top of what the pandemic has already done to the league. I would think any CBA changes would be pretty limited in scope to mechanisms that help you manage the temporary change in revenues, like cap smoothing.

Offer the players a little more money in exchange for eliminating sone of these loopholes.

How many players are ever going to be in a position to where they have a stake in a talent agency like LeBron does? They’d take the money and sign.

seems like they could just declare the cap is $XMM next year regardless of revenues and move on

They have to make sure they will actually have the money to pay for it..

Owners like Fertitta are hurting right now, as all of his money is tied up in a casino that was forced to closed, a NBA team that was forced to stop, and restaurants that have seen a HUGE drop in customers

Let's say this is a one year blip and both sides agree to split the costs/lost revenue with their normal split. Obviously the cap falling 40% in one year would make it so most teams couldn't perform normal and expected roster management moves. If you try smooth the cap by keeping it artificially high next year, you'll have to keep it artificially low, probably for several years, to make up the difference.

I think that's what they'd have to figure out the details on, how low for how long.
