You damn right it does. A private owned company should have the right to follow their beliefs. My tax dollars are not being used to run the company so if they don't want to make me a cake I should move on and find someone that does. I don't want you to force your beliefs down my throat so why should I have the right to force my down yours!

Show me where in your religion it teaches to deny service to someone based on them being sinful. In fact it says the exact opposite

It is probably because they believe it is the only sin that they see as being put on a pedestal as good, wholesome, and worthy of promoting at every turn through movie, entertainment, and all other aspects of everyday life.

Someone hasn't paid much attention to all the Beer commercials on TV, radio, and other media.

difference in a "sinner" being welcome in a church and a "sinner" being in a leadership position in church....

You know that’s not the issue being discussed

Ask the same baker to bake a cake celebrating drug addiction

Ask the florist to decorate a brothel

Kingbob, here you go

Proverbs 23:20f: "Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags."

Isaiah 5:11f: "Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine. They have harps and lyres at their banquets, tambourines and flutes and wine, but they have no regard for the deeds of the LORD, no respect for the work of his hands."

Galatians 5:19–21: "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: ... drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Ephesians 5:18: "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."

So only landowners got married?

Non-landowners didn't have much of a dowry...

Gays don’t, oddly enough. As of 2017, ~90% of them weren’t married. Despite 60% of cohabiting gays being married. Which suggests they don’t particularly even care to cohabit.

There's a lot of non-gays who are cohabitation as well

The idea that "everyone wants a family" is pretty outdated.

That's just as much a sin.

re: Why do churches get so worked up over gays?
Because nobody I speak with...ever....tries to say alcoholism, drug addiction, murder, lying, theft, greed, envy, etc, are behaviors that should be overlooked and even accepted. Even though one of these sins are committed by most of us at least once a day, Christians do not openly endorse and try to normalize them as acceptable behavior. Homosexuality is a sin. It runs afoul of both natural and divine law.

I know of few churches that “get worked up” over it in this modern age. Well, except for members of Islamic Mosques. My church wants them as much as the drug addict. Church should not be a meeting of the well, but rather a healing place for sinners. All of us.

re: Why do churches get so worked up over gays?
The whole point of the Christian idea is:

Identifying sin in your life and accepting the Salvation
from it that is offered to everyone.

No one should ever be treated with anything other than love no matter where they are. Christians should be a light in a world of darkness so that their very presence in this world compels non Christians to inquire about what makes them different. Unfortunately the Church in general has failed at this.

Christians are more likely to turn a blind eye to members sinning and then condemn and berate sinners that are outside the church community and exclude them or treat them with disdain when they try to come to church and learn more about God.

re: Why do churches get so worked up over gays?
quote:

I don't believe being gay rises to the level of a mortal sin.

You are right. It does not. Engaging in sexual conduct with another of the same sex does. In fact, homosexual conduct is reserved for the harshest words of the New Testament, Romans 1:27-29
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Those words which I bolded should terrify homosexuals. Nowhere else in scripture can I find any other passage which remotely hints that God would/could abandon you. I have pondered this many times and the only thing I can come up with is that homosexual acts defile and pervert the image of God.

re: Why do churches get so worked up over gays?
I saw a few weeks ago that as of 2017 there were still more gays in a opposite sex marriage than a same sex marriage.

Around 10% of gays get married. Lesbians married get divorced at a higher rates than gay dudes or hetero marriages. No surprise there fellas.

So if currently 3 percent of the population is homosexual and 10 percent of that 3 percent is actually using gay marriage....that is 3 individuals of a thousand in a gay marriage.

This group of 3/1000 and the transgender folks who are about 6/1000 are the combined 9/1000 people at the cutting edge of sexual norms in America.

Those numbers seem small but they add up. And they will likely continue to rise.

but I have never understood how someone can go get blasted drunk then scream about being gay being a sin.

If that person not only got blasted drunk, but had pride in his drunkenness, was unapologetic about his drunkenness, and looked forward to getting drunk every day then yea it would be on par with most instances of homosexuality.

re: Why do churches get so worked up over gays?
quote:

Looks like you do,

Nah. I’m Christian and not of the liberal variety.

It was just a question. I never claimed to have the answer.

Just seems to me that IF hypothetically, God wanted to write something into the algorithm that is human DNA to ensure the species doesn’t overpopulate, then writing into human DNA a component that would prevent or at least strongly deter a portion of the population from reproducing once population hits a certain critical mass would be one way of doing it.

I never said I believed that speculative theory to be fact.

Unless you’re God, you have no way of knowing with 100% certainty that the theory is false. I’m not God, so I don’t know nor claim to know.

What I do know is that I place more emphasis on biblical passages encouraging people to judge not, lest we be judged than I do those passages relating to homosexuality.

I would hope that my son won’t turn out to be gay, but if he does I’ll still love him.

My point was that with all the nefarious, scandalous and evil things happening all around the world that are objectively far worse than two people of the same gender hooking up, it seems like maybe that stuff should receive more condemnation than something that really doesn’t affect anyone outside of a small demographic.

It’s not that I support it. My take is that it has little effect on me, and I just don’t care all that much relative to what I perceive to be far more important issues.

If gay people all go to hell for all eternity it doesn’t affect me. I’d rather use the time discussing how to feed and educate starving children in developing countries that hear a lecture I’ve already heard a hundred times about how gay = bad when I go to church on Sunday.

You’re playing fast and loose with the assumptions. May want to reevaluate how you interpret what other people say.
