Is Hal Hughes a lock to start at short?

Or does Mathis have a chance to start there? I listened to PMs recent interview and he talked about 3 different line ups and mentioned his "best offensive" infield and "best defensive" infield. I read it as a possibility of Mathis moving to short for the "best offensive" infield.
What's y'alls thoughts?

Hughes will start
Arnold may replace him once he’s back, 8-10 weeks

Cranford has a shot of replacing him as well.
I think Hughes will be fine though.

Yeah, I think Hughes will be fine. We all know what he is by now, a below average SEC hitter and an above average SEC fielder.
I just thought the comments from PM were interesting regarding "best offensive infield". Certainly that didn't include Hughes, who knows, it was probably coach speak. PM also made a comment about Mathis playing an "adequate 3rd and short".

During spring scrimmages CPM experimented with Mathis at SS and Cade Doughty at 3rd. I think this move was what he was referring to in the interview.

Yes, Hughes knows where the bodies are buried.

He hit .174 last year, and is .201 lifetime. Hughes has gotten worse over time. He is well past "below average", and into full blown "liability at the plate". He has no business being in the starting lineup of any SEC team, much less LSU. I feel for the kid, but he is not up to this level of play.
