Bump.

Anyone else feeling better about this after seeing how The Witcher was handled?

Haven't watched The Witcher, but I'll check it out. Amazon has done a good job with most of their offering so I'm pretty confident in a worthy adaptation

I think there are two areas where my concern levels with WOT would be beyond something like the Witcher. With Witcher they basically just followed the books and it worked great.

With WOT there is a ton of fat they are going to have to edit out of the books to make it work on a show. So it's really going to come down to how good of a job they do there.

My other major concern is what the special effects will look like, as this show will require crazy good cgi to look good. It will be very easy for this show to become a cheese fest with poor cgi due to the high magic constantly used in the books.

Flurry of casting news lately, with part 2 of season 1 filming under way after a short christmas break.

Not going to list all of the roles, but most notable would probably be Leanne Sedai (actress really looks the part), as well as Katy Fleets as Liandrin, and Maria Doyle Kennedy, a fairly accomplished british actress, in an unannounced role (probably Siuan).

But the biggest news was the title of Episode 5...Blood of My Blood.

The significance of this is that it says without a doubt that Season 1 will cover almost the entirety of Books 1 and 2, with a lot of condensing and changes to make it work streamlined.

If we are being honest, there is simply no other way to do the show.

How many episodes will be in the first season? I can’t imagine them fitting both books into a single 8 episode season.

It appears it will be 8.

Jordan had previously mentioned many years ago that he thought EotW could be done in 4-5.

Its definitely going to be interesting, but they are obviously going to have to cut out some characters and scenes. I honestly think we are going to see a show that follows the basic story (point A to Point B) and most of the main characters, but a LOT of consolidated stuff.

And think of the shear amount of description, pages and pages of it, that Jordan puts in. That's eliminated with a single shot.

I don't envy their task.

I suppose that direction certainly saves money, but I also thought how deep and detailed the world is that they could very easily explore more of the towns and cities. Going from meeting the cast to Tarwin's Gap in 4 episodes seems so fast.

I have some thoughts on what needs to be eliminated, but its obviously going to be a different story with the bones of the framework, but that's it. No other way to do it.

Spoilers

For instance, they could go straight from Caemlyn to the EotW and cut out Shienar and all that on the way there. Cut out Baerlon.

Heck, characters like Elayne and Min have not been announced and we don't even know if they will exist in Season 1.

Elayne not being in the in the eye of the world parts wouldn't be a huge deal, and I guess they could make leaving min out work, but how on Earth could either not be in the great hunt without wrecking the story?

I don't see doing the first book in 4 episodes being too outrageous, there is a ton of fluff. But I don't see any way to do the second book in half a season and do it coherently.

The first season could end with them getting captured at flame -would be a good point for the sort of cliff hanger type ending these shows often go for.

For those interested, the first really shot from the production is out there. Leaked. Not official.

It depicts Mat and Rand in a pretty dramatic shot.

You can see it on The Daily Trolloc’s Instagram or Reddit.

Looks like Wintersnight. They better nail Tam's sword or I'm gonna be pissed.

That was just like a set shot right? The actual show is going to look a lot better after editing, etc?

It is likely from an actual sizzle reel, not a set shot.

Also there are different versions going around. The darkest one is from the sizzle reel. if you are seeing brightened versions of it (the most popular one going around), that was done by people on Reddit so they could see it clearer.

I don't know what that means - just wondering if that is what we can expect it to look like or if it will go through editing and look a lot better?

A sizzle reel is similar to a daily. A daily is the shots they send back...daily to the studio so they can see whats being filmed, what the progress is, etc. Sometimes they are so bad a studio will make changes or pull the plug.

Amazon chief recently was raving about the dailys.

A sizzle reel is a short promotional thing they will send out consisting of a variety of scenes, to drum up excitement. Its not for outside use generally, just to the studio execs, or for an actor to get interest.

One of the cast let slip recently that a sizzle reel went out. A day or two later this shot hit the internets, so its likely actual footage.

Obviously, they are not even close to post-production so nothing is a "finished product" yet.

I'm nearing the end of a reread, on knife of dreams, actually feeling really good about the series and how it can be adapted in the time given.

As we all know, the level if description is massive and he spends a lot of time rehashing how characters are confused or conflicted, etc. All of which can be taken care of with a few seconds of dialogue.

Also I think that if they can channel some of the Dr. Strange type effects for channeling and the dreamworld it can play out well. Do a few close up during practice/ training/ healing showing threads and then just show the impact on wide shots or something

Doing my first read and had to take a break about half way through crown of swords before finishing. Just starting path of daggers now. Just curious if y’all ranked the books how would you rank them? So far I think great hunt was my favorite and the back end of crown got me back into it (during holidays didn’t have time to read with work). I’m committed to finishing no matter what but I’ve heard some of the back end ones aren’t quite up to par.
