Definitely. It probably stems from the fact that USC's reign was shorter-lived and they were never in the title chase without winning their conference, not to mention their generally more exciting playstyle.

1985-1995 was the shite.
The U, USC was still in the mix being ranked #1, Notre Dame came back to stardom, FSU was rolling, Washington was huge, Bama came back, Penn State finally won it's first Natty, Nebraska was huge, Colorado.
It was a truly National landscape of teams and not just centered on a few teams or region.
Late 80's to early 90's was an apex for a sport that wants to appeal to all fanbases across the country.
