Where, exactly, are you planning to go? There is a world of difference between Turin in March vs Rome, or Naples. It’s a long, skinny country with mountains: some places will be warmer & have a spring just like the southeastern US (or even a bit warmer, nearer the coast) while the far north (Turin, Milan) will still be on the cold side.

Follow the Scottish saying—there is no bad weather, only wrong clothing—and you’ll have a great time in Mar/April. Just don’t go to seacoast resort towns, as the Italians don’t go to the beach in winter in any great numbers. Off season coastal resort towns are often half empty and full of closed for the season businesses.

Was in Rome in mid-Aril 2015 and mid-May 2017. May was getting to be a little too hot to enjoy Rome.

Aril was perfect weather for visiting Rome.

We've been to Rome in February, and it was cold, but nice. We've also been to Venice, Milan, Florence, etc. in March. It was chilly, but comfortable with a coat. If March is the off-season, I wouldn't want to be in Venice during high season.

Please. Where did I say the beaches weren’t beautiful? I’ve been to the Amalfi Coast in February, the Sicilian coast around Taormina in early March, and Palermo and the Tyrrhenian Coast of Sicily around the same time, plus quite a few other coastal spots like Maratea in between. The big lidos (beach clubs) aren’t open this early, many beach businesses are still closed for the season, hotels like Le Sirenuse in Posi close completely and won’t reopen until early April......I love to go to Italian coastal towns in the off season. They go back to being locals only. BUT, many ppl would be disappointed to hit up a place where more than half of the businesses are closed (as I found in Giardini Naxos in Feb).

I agree with this, but let's also point out those businesses that are closed are those based on tourism only. Tourism both local Italians and foreigners. So absolutely if you go from Nov - April tourism businesses may be closed or very limited on hours. But you can still enjoy the area and the local places like grocery stores, local used restaurants, etc. are still very much open.

I've been to the beaches of Italy during the off season and the bar and restaurants are closed, the beach chairs and beach service not open, etc. But you can still very much walk the beach, enjoy the scenery, and have a fantastic day of having the area almost to yourself.

ETA: the off season is also a fantastic time to chat with the locals. The bartender is not slammed so you'll get to chat them up and get some good local tips. They can provide you with restaurants that are open. If you stay in a decent hotel, the employees can always provide you places the locals go to eat and drink.

In 2017 I went to Rome, Florence, and Positano during April. Early April at that. The weather was perfect. Needed a light jacket to start the mornings and most days I wore thin golf-like pants. By lunch the jacket was gone. In Positano it was warm enough to sit by the pool every day and swim some days. I think I wore shorts walking around during the day in Positano.

Take a train through the Dolomites (ex: Milan to Turin) for breathtaking scenery

Depends on which part of the country of course, but I've been in April (Florence and Rome) and it was wonderful. Less people too. May forward it can get pretty hot (Rome particularly) and of course more people.

PS: I think this article on "Underrated Italy" was interesting.

We went in March. Rained the first two days, and was in the 60s for most of the trip. Reslly comfortable temps.
As a poster said above, amalfi coast was empty and mostly shut down. I wouldn’t still go but I would plan on hitting up multiple towns just to have enough to do outside of exploring an empty town

That is my favorite tine to go. The weather is fine, and, except for Easter in Rome, it is not that crowded. I have been several times in March and April and the weather is usually very nice. I was in Tuscany and Venice last year at that time and we could not have asked for better weather. Some days were chilly but out of two weeks we only had one day of rain. .... We were in Rome for Easter in 2014. It rained the night before, but Easter morning was perfect - sunny and mild. We spent the week before Easter on the Amalfi Coast. It was nice most of the time with a couple of days of cool drizzle.

I went in april a couple yrs ago...milan you venice to florence to cinque terra to milan\como

Great time of yr.unless its Easter week. Lower tourist numbers and good weather. I could imagine that the trash pick up in Venice during the summer could be pretty bad.
