Victor Electronic Rat Trap

If there's one thing, I can't stand, it's rats.
Some years ago, we used to see' em outside at night, mostly running along fences and occasionally in trees.
But ever since we started seeing possums around, seems like the rats have gone away. Hadn't seen any for quite a few years.
That is, until last week when I was out on the front porch having a cigar and heard some rustling up in the tree leaves. Shined a flashlight on it and sure enough, it was little rat.
So at Lowes the other day, I picked up one of these:
Battery-powered electronic rat trap. Rats go in after bait, get zapped and die. Sounded cool. Late yesterday afternoon, I put it up on the top fence cross-beam where I have seen rats run. Checked it this morning, and it got something.
A freaking squirrel.
Damn it! (I like our squirrels).
Anybody else ever use these things, or had better success? I'm thinking about trying it again, but this time placing it on the ground by the fence. Just worried about wiping out the squirrel population.

Get the more expensive one with the camera at the entrance of the trap. It does rodent identification, and will not randomly zap anything but what you intended when you set it up.

Poor squirrel. Why are you bothered by rats outside? If you live in the hot, humid south, wood rats (aka tree rats) are going to be a natural part of the landscape. As long as they're not inside your house, or present in crazy population numbers, let them be. They're food for snakes, hawks, owls, etc.
If you have readily accessible bird seed in feeders, pet food left outside, uncovered garbage cans, fallen/uncollected fruit beneath fruit trees, or other rat food lying around, they're gonna be attracted to your area.

No snakes in our area; the hawks and Mississippi Kites are only around during the daytime (and the rats are only out at night), and our little nighttime screech owls aren't much bigger than the rats.

Thankfully, none of that at my house. And I doubt there's really much of that around the neighborhood, either.

The live traps are great at catching rats and squirrels. Squirrels you can just release. Rats I usually shoot in the head with my BB gun.
Peanut butter, nuts, fruit, bird seed, anything for rats. May try those. $15 on amazon or $25 at your local Ace.

Last night re-baited and put the trap out just after dusk.
Much more favorable results this time:
That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!! Gonna keep following this 'after-dark' procedure until it stops catching them.

Yeah the rats generally don’t come out until night. My parents have a hot tub and they absolutely freaking love that thing. We kill 10 or more a year in and around it. It’s weird they would like a hot tub in the south to me? But they used to have privacy bushes around it, very occasionally we’d see them in the bushes in day light and about half the time they’d let you close to them so I have multiple rat BB gun kills out of the bushes.
Anyway, my point I came to say was the other weekend my parents were gone so I looked after their dogs and I set my live trap 3 nights in a row and got a rat every night. Absurd. My dad didn’t set it again when he got back so who knows how many of those suckers are around it. Keep setting that trap and I’ve been told to clean them with soap as the smell of a dad rat will eventually warm them off.
