Peacock Bass in South Florida

They are all over the place. The farther south, the better. You'll find them in Ft Lauderdale and Pembroke, but the better numbers are in Miami to Homestead. They love topwaters. If you find them on the bed, it's the easiest fishing you will ever see.

Dude, as a couple of other posters have said, Peacock Bass (and several other non-native species) are widely distributed and easily found throughout the canals in South Florida.

I would not hire a guide unless you need to rely on them for rods/reels and tackle!
Here is a Metro Canal Map courtesy of FWC. This shows the major canals but there are many smaller drainage & "feeder" canals that don't appear on this map. Take a look at Google Earth.
Most of the canals have some type of access where they intersect with public roads.
I have had great success in the C-1 (Black Creek Canal) & the C-111 (Aerojet Canal.) The C-1 has a public multi-use path that winds along the canal from a spot near the Miami Zoo all the way down to Black Point Marina.
I would suggest using a "stick & move" strategy. A few casts with no results is a sign to move on to the next spot!

If you do head down to the 111, you might want to throw a bike in your vehicle. The roads along the canal banks are gated and locked by South Florida Water Management District but it is legal to walk (and bike) along the canal. You can cover a lot more canal on a bike, & wearing a small backpack with some tackle & a cold 6-pack in it is a good plan.
