How far out do you need to go and is there a particular time of year that is best to target them? And what baits and methods are best? I ask bc I caught something yesterday that looked like a tarpon the way they come out of water and put on a show after hooked. It was a smaller one if so but I didn't boat said fish so I don't really know for sure what it was. Just curious, if not are there other fish that do the same thing? We hooked two that both did it and got off. We were about 5 miles south of GI in about 50 foot of water targeting mangroves at the time. Not sure on miles off shore but def was 50 foot depth.

This
Probably about average sized Ladyfish

Tarpon - Guys who fish for these may correct me but I don't think the one in the Pic is particularly big.

Yeah, that's a baby tarpon.

Sounds like OP hooked some ladyfish, aka poor man's tarpon.

Thx that was my other guess as far as what it could been. Lady fish any good bait for offshore?

And just out of curiosity how far out and what bait tactics are used to target tarpon?

No idea for that area, but ladyfish are great cut bait. Smaller ones are great trolled for Kings, too.

I hate ladyfish. They will ruin a good trout bite. And they are slimy, bleed everywhere, and smell

tarpon at the shallow rigs grabbing a bait are common
you have just about zero chance of landing one like that though. Their jawbone is big and tough and nothing can shake a bait like a tarpon

the tarpon fisherman here troll a big jig head bait called a Coon pop snelled to a circle hook...it’s a two part lure that drops the head and feather when you get a hookup

Argo pops and coon pops can be cast to them. Circle hooks will hook them. Finding them is the hard part - simply seeing rolling tarpon or free jumpers does not equal feeding tarpon and they aren’t that finicky

West delta 50 ish area now through first cool snap
