Hardcore...that's the stretch of the century if you were referring to me !

They are a great shoe that are made well + the websites you recommend are great.

Being new I went and got properly fitted but got very heavy Hokas and Brooks at retail price + they always seemed waterlogged after a run.

I do think the Bostons are holding up better because my form is getting better , my old soles were destroyed because I sort of dragged my feet.

As for the 31 pounds, I committed to my health/family when I started running...fat isnt fun and I successfully was able to fat shame myself.

Last September was 210 @ 5'11" and yesterday was 178 before my run...with a substantial amount of bodyfat left to drop.

Strong work. Keep it up. Your story mirrors mine. 7 years ago, I was 5’ 9” 215 lbs and decided something needed to be done. I made changes to my diet and also began running. I am currently 160 lbs and still running, although now I seem to be running with more purpose and goals thanks to this board.

Roots runs in Altras and a few people I know swear by them. Just a matter of getting used to 0 drop.

I've been told many times that this would be better for me, especially since I don't heel strike.

Mid foot striker here and put in considerable miles on the Escalantes. Great shoe, EGO is tops. Zero drop effed my achilies and hips for a while. Great shoes but not for me.

Interesting, I've heard it will help the Achilles. Something I'll have to pay attention to while trying these out. What did you switch to?

on the shoe front, i finally bought my first new pair in 9 months. my reserves from last year and shoe swapping has served me well so that i've only thrown out one shoe in the last 9 months and retired a pair of brooks to lawn care.

Academy had the Brooks Launch 6 and Anthem 2 on sale for around $70 each. Launch had better reviews, but the Anthem felt and looked better. Went with the Anthem.

Did a decently paced 10k on them this morning and i was pretty darn pleased. i'm pretty sore from lunges and squats this week and they didn't exacerbate that.

not an overly cushioned shoe compared to the ghosts or launches but it is lighter at 9 oz.

it was good when i went uptempo the last mile and cushioned enough for a heel striker like myself.

I’ve come full circle to adidas and race in non fly knit Nikes. People push low drop but what it really comes down to is preference and what your body responds to well.

3N isn’t that the stability version of the Launch 6? Either way happy you like em and got that deal!

ETA those are like the trail ready version of the launch.

It’s a neutral shoe. I think the Ravenna is the stability version of the Launch. I did like the launch but the colorway I liked wasn’t in my size and it squeezed my toes a bit too much.

I think Brooks Calderas Or Mazmas are the Trail version of Launch whereas Cascadias are more like Ghosts or Glycerines. Tread is fairly aggressive though.

I just bought a pair of the much-hyped NB FuelCell Rebels. Hoping they can be my marathon shoe in October. I'll report back after I get a chance to break 'em in.

I really like the FC Propel. I'll post a review on them soon. Interested in the Rebel as well, but don't really have room in my closet for now. Trying to retire a few before I buy anymore. I've recently shelved the Escalante and FF Beacon.

First impressions on the Kayenta: I love em!

Maybe there's something to the zero drop thing, I don't know. I don't really notice. It's been a while since I've had a pair of shoes this light, but they were incredibly comfortable to run in. They didn't feel like they needed to be broken in or anything like that. Perfect fit for my foot too. I'm a little too happy with how they were today , so I'll try to temper that and keep an open mind moving forward.

My experience with the Escalante is mixed. I found it became pretty flat and non responsive for up tempo work after about 220 miles and I prefer a heel to toe offset for longer/easier runs, so I retired them at about 230 miles.

Bumping this up...

Got a question regarding shoes/stride.

I was fit into Mizuno Wave Inspire 15’s (moderate stability shoe) back in April when I first took up running. Ran the CCC 10K in them a week after I bought them and had no issues/found them very comfy. Recently I’ve found that they don’t feel as cushioned or feel a bit dead, but I estimate I have less than 200 miles walking/running on them. Curious if this could be related to changes in my form? Or if maybe the hot weather deteriorated the energy return of the foam?

When I first started I was definitely over striding and heel striking, I’ve been making an effort to shorten my stride, up my cadence, and strike more mid foot (though I’m sure I still get a bit heel-y from time to time). I find my Pumas (foam midsole akin to Adidas Boost) are much more comfy and I can run 6+ miles no problem (except a bit of irritation by mile 6). I did 3 in the Mizunos yesterday and felt there was no way I could go more than 4. Considering getting fit again to see if my stride has really changed that much or if this is all in my head.

ETA: also want to hear TigerRoots review of the FC Propel. I really want a pair, but not sure they’d be right for me.

I’ve had shoes that failed to make it past 200 miles several times. Heat can definitely be a contributor as well as rest between use (for the shoes). Most of the time you just got a pair of duds.

It could be a change in form but I’m skeptical unless the forefoot and heel are different pieces or foam types.

By the way, there’s nothing wrong with heel striking and be weary of anyone that says there is. 90 percent of the planet and 60 percent of the elites are heel strikers.

i have a pair well north of 400 with no issues and i've retired a pair at 150 miles because the cushion obviously broke down.

every shoe is different.

i'm a heel striker and i feel like i make shoes last a long time and also remain injury free compared to most people i run with.

Thanks. Yeah, I know I’ve changed the way I run slightly, but I don’t think it was drastic. I think I’m still more of a heel striker, but I shortened my stride to prevent reaching and the injuries that go along with that.

The shoes do have two different types of foam. I believe there is a firmer foam that runs from the forefoot all the way through the heel, then there is a softer foam at the heel separated from the other foam by the plastic wave plate. Not sure what exactly happened or had changed, but I think I may shop around again and this time maybe opt for slightly less drop and slightly more cushion.
