If you want to do it right find a pro who will properly test your water and then build a minimum 3 stage whole home filtration system. You want something good enough to get all the pharmaceuticals and agriculture runoff.

If you need extra softening it might end up with 4 stages. A good system will run between $2-5k and be worth every penny.

So I can test the water myself and install myself, no need to pay someone to do something I can.... just seems like online there is no good data regarding what’s good and what’s bad as for a brands and operations go, seems like nothing but salesmen.

But building a custom filter based on your specific water testing is not something you can do. The big store filtration systems are generic and provide no guarantees for your water issues. Maybe a pro in your area will give you a deal by making the filtration system for you and then letting you install it but it probably won't save that much $.

A proper filtration system will have custom blended filtration ingredients per stage with likely at least 3 stages of filtration. Different types of ingredients provide different filtration properties. It will be designed specifically for your water at your house. Nobody makes a filter that is guaranteed to work for every situation.

If you honestly want good whole home filtration, there is only one way to guarantee it. If the costs are too high, maybe look into just filtering your drinking water. In that case, Propur makes a really good in-line filter that will work on any fridge or other 1/4" water line outlet.
