Are you reading A Song of Ice and Fire for the first time? Have you heard that volumes four and five, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons, cover the same time period but split up the characters, so that most of the people who appear in Feast don’t show up in Dance and vice versa? Do you think you’ll be one of the people that finds this really frustrating? (I’m not, I was perfectly happy with the books as-is and recommend them as such, but I know y'all are out there.) Are you interested in recombining the two halves of the story in hopes that it’ll make for a more satisfying reading experience? Here’s how you do it!

I've heard about this repeatedly but I've never tried it. I'm considering starting a re-read.

Should I try it? Is it really that much better?

Here's a pic of Missandei for your trouble:

I did. It was a few years back, but I remember enjoying it. Although, my enjoyment could have been from having a full knowledge of the series and appreciating Feast a lot more because of it.

I kind of wish I had read it this way for my first time, but I'm hoping that it's been long enough since I did a re-read that I'll be able to see a difference.

It is a much better version.

There was a pdf version somewhere on the internet that I can no longer find in a few minutes.

First time I read the series, I read Feast first and Dance second.

On my reread, I did the Boiled Leather version. The Boiled Leather version was superior.

I did the Boiled Leather version about a year ago and it was much better than the published order. I'd recommend it.

I did it on my second reread and it was worth it. If in some chance in hell Fat Boy ever completes it, I would like an interactive version of ASOIAF that could be used on a Kindle that also keeps track how far you are into the narrative when it comes to the appendices. Like for instance, if you highlight "Ned Stark" on page 255, it won't tell you anything about Ned Stark that you haven't read about yet. With this version you'd co-mingle AFFC and ADWD, but also a few chapters that intermingle towards the beginning of ASOS and putting them in ACOK.

I'm reading the series for the first time right now (finishing up ACOK now). Would you recommend the boiled leather version for a first time reader or should I stick to the original?

Did Boiled Leather for my third round. I thought it was much better.

I've only read it that way. Just contemplating having to keep track of who was doing what would have been maddening. If they were novella length or even "normal" novels, that would be one thing, but it takes me weeks to get through these things.

The Boiled Leather order is generally pretty good and there are some options to keep a handful of spoilers (which doesn't apply if you're doing it on a reread).

I’ve done it an prefer the boiled leather approach. If you are going to do a reread, that’s the way to go.

I think first time readers show stick to the way they were published, just to keep better track of characters and events.

sorry for the bump, but at least this thread isn't 4 years old...

I'm in the middle of my first complete reread. I've read AGoT probably 3 or 4 times now, ACoK 3 times, and ASoS 2.5 times, but never have gotten to the point where rereading Feast and Dance was appealing.

I finally decided to do one complete reread of all 5 books using Audible on my drive to and from work (usually 30-40 minutes so I can get in a chapter each way). Now that the show is over, I've had an intense desire to read Feast and Dance and revisit the middle part of the complete story in the way it was intended to be told. Also, if the Pizza Boy finally decides to release the next book in the next few years, it will be nice to have this refresher out of the way.

I finished ASoS recently and decided to do boiled leather for Feast and Dance. I am only through both prologues and the first 2 chapters of Feast and I can already tell that this was a great idea. You immediately go from Cersei's perspective (in Feast) following the Tywin murder to Tyrion's perspective (in Dance) as he is on his way to Essos.

My only regret is that there isn't one Audible file set up in this manner (unless there is one that I don't know about). It's a mild pain to go between books but ultimately well worth the slight inconvenience.
