Smiley's People rounds out the series but it isn't as good as the first too. Love the BBC adaptations w/ Alec Guiness

The Spies of Warsaw.

You should read his WW II era novels in chronological order from date of publication. He really sets the “mood” in the early books and there are recurring characters and themes that one needs to be introduced to ab initio. Some of them are reminiscent of Graham Greene at his best.

The First Conspiracy is about the attempt to capture Washington during the Revolution.

The Spy and the Traitor is a great spy novel that is 100% true story.

A man Called Intrepid, by the man who ran the Brits' covert activities during WWII. I didn't know till I read it that they had kill squads operating in the uS during the years before we entered the war, and FDR knew it!

Rise and Kill First is a great book about targeted killings and the espionage behind them.

Nonfiction - A Spy Among Friends

Just finished this, and holy hell what a great book.

I'm pretty young and never even heard of Kim Philby before reading it. Author does a great job of laying it out where it almost reads like a fictional story because it's so audacious.

Fiction: The Cardinal of the Kremlin (Clancy)

Nonfiction (these are not about career spies - they are about famous people who served in espionage organizations during World War II): The Catcher Was a Spy (Dwaidoff about Moe Berg) and Niv: The Authorized Biography (Lord about David Niven)

Magazine essay rather than a book but a great read anyway.

My Father, The Spy - John H. Richardson

I'm not sure how I got signed up for this Esquire Classic newsletter but they send me 5 or 6 fascinating articles from their vaults every month. I guess it's free I don't remember paying for it.
