Travel to China?

I've recently become interested in a trip to China. Beijing is an obvious stop...Great Wall, etc. But I recently learned from a student I tutor about the island of Sanya (photo below). Supposedly beautiful beaches, awesome resorts, etc. So I did a little research and found amazing resorts for under $150 a night and some even for under $100. And I'm talking the major chains...Marriott, Intercontinental, Mandarin, etc.
Has anyone ever been there, and does anyone have any suggestions? I lived in Asia for six years and have been all over Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, but never China. King ocean view room with a balcony at the Four Points by Sheraton on Sanya for $80. I couldn't believe the prices. Has anyone ever been to Sanya?
BTW...the kid I tutor is with VIP Kids. Tutoring Chinese kids online for $20 an hour. Been doing it for 6 months. It's legit. 8-12 year old Chinese kids that speak pretty darn good English. They all have English in school. They are on summer break now, but one of my students had a three hour English lesson yesterday.

If you go, also make a side trek to Shanghai. I liked Beijing more, but Shanghai was neat. Also, the high-speed train goes for 4-5 hours between cities is a really good deal.

Not been there but been to Beijing a few times on business
It really is a bucket list destination just like paris(lucky guy going there in December)
Anyway try to spend a few days in Beijing
Most hotels run excursions for you with locals
You have to go see the wall but try to go to a stop past the first common tourist one it will be less crowded
But it is a tough hike and lots of stairs steps
Wander the forbidden city and imagine what it must have been like for the people then
And if interested go to the pearl market to buy done saltwater pearls
It is on the Top floor of the knock off market

I normally spend my time in the SW Interior

Cities like Anshun, Guiyang, and Guilin are all awesome places to visit if your into awesome scenery, hiking, spicy food, and squatting to crap.

Thanks for all of the info. I would still love to know more about Sanya. Beautiful beaches and 5 star hotels at bargain prices, it seems.

Was on my to Sanya in November (shorts and flip flops packed!) for a week for work. The crew I was meeting kept telling me how it was the "Hawaii off China". When I landed in Hong Kong I got a message to re-route to Tianjin...where it was barely above freezing all week. Had to buy new clothes there.
This helps you none, but I'm still pissed about it. Ha.
I had a nice, and as you mentioned cheap, hotel booked on the beach. Supposedly, lots of Russian tourists.

If it is really the beach and low prices for five star treatment you should look into Thailand and Vietnam instead

I lived in Bangladesh for 5 years, and Bangkok was only 2 hours away, so I've been to Thailand a dozen times. This would be part of a bigger trip to China. Never been there.

I do like China and the people
I always found them nice in general but I was lucky and always on business so our local offices were arranging logistics
I just know based on experience and others out of places your looking Vietnam is a winner
But if it is a China experience you want I can understand that
Logistics can be hard sometimes just cause not as common but that is part of the adventure
I know your looking at beach but if possible get to some mountain temples and the wall
Wall is just that a wall but you will walk it and realize people lived on it .....born. Worked died and never left it

I'm going to China in November. Anything fairly unique to China I should know about ahead of time so that it doesn't cause an unexpected problem?

Complete lack of personal space in public.
I was also surprised at how many times my CC wasn't accepted (Visa). This was in Beijing and not anywhere rural. VPN will be needed for many websites/apps that you are used to using in the states as well.
