Bow Releases: Thinking of switching to a BT or Thumb

I shot about a dozen arrows yesterday for the first time this year, and while I was hitting my marks more times than not, I want to just be more consistent this year. I've seen a recent trend of guys raving about John Dudley's "School of Nock" and practicing proper form. I'm sure I've got 20+ years of bad habits that need to be broken, so I'm seriously considering going the back tension or thumb release route. I've watched a few of his videos and tried to incorporate some of the stuff he teaches, but I think my current release brings me back to bad habits. Any suggestions on where to start? His releases are $200. Are there comparable releases for less money?

I just bought the True Ball Max Pro+ yesterday. It’s a thumb release not an BT and I chose this model because it has the spring loaded caliper head which allows me to lock the release on my string loop in the stand and it also swivels which eliminates string torque.

I started using the Stanislawski Element last year. If I am not mistaken it operates the same as the John Dudely NockOn release. It is not a "thumb" release really. You hold the thumb lever while pulling bow back then release the lever at full draw. You then "pull through" the shot causing the release to activate. I have not hunted with it yet. I plan to but want to become more confident that I can make the shot under the pressure of hunting. I have tried numerous back tension and thumb releases over the years. Obviously everyone is different but for me this type of release has made a huge difference in my shooting.

Very similar yes. Just doesn't have a half moon or cam that you rotate off of. It uses a spring. If your holding weight after let off is say 17lbs, you set the spring tension at 18. It really is not much different than back tension but for some reason I am able to shoot more consistently with it.

Yeah that thing is almost $300. I’m a little apprehensive to spend that kind of coin on something I may or may not like. What sucks is that there aren’t any decent pro shops around here for me to go test anything out.
