Started this series this year and am almost done with book 2.

I highly recommend trying it out, however it is frustrating knowing that there are only 3 released out of a planned 10. That means the series may not be done till in the 2030s...

Was a little slow starting but gets ridiculously good towards the end of book 1

If it makes you feel better, the plan is to have two groups of five. So, while it will be ten books in the Archive, they will sort of be separate story wise.

Also, Sanderson has a bunch of other books that take place in the same interconnected universe, the Cosmere, to sate your appetite.

All of the Mistborn books?

Elantris.
Warbreaker.
White Sand. (3 Graphic novels officially; adaptation of an older unpublished story that you can get by joining his newsletter)
Arcanum Unbounded - collection of "short" stories that appeared elsewhere that take place on Cosmere worlds.

Plus, Sanderson pumps out novels like a rabbit pumps out babies. It's astonishing.

Waiting for book 3 to be released in mass market paperback before reading it, but a very strong series. There is so much good fantasy out there now, much easier to wait for the next installment f a series than 15/20 years ago.

I rent it through my library electronically but you can only rent for 21 days at a time so I've had to renew 4 times already since it's so damn long

Maybe a dumb question, but I’ve not read any of Sandwrson’s work.

But I’ve always had the impression that his work is more for pre-teens/ young adults.

Is that accurate or does his work get dark and gritty like GRRM, Abercrombie, Erikson and others?

He writes all different kind. Some is geared towards middlegrade, some is young adult some adult fantasy etc.

Mistborn probably started out YA and moved towards adult. Wax and Wayne and Stormlight are both adult.

And mistborn still gets gritty, etc. It just doesn't go inti that depressing grimdark stuff like Abercrombie, weeks, etc. which sort of lacks the balance of a lot of more pure happy moments which aren't cauched with most all off the heroes dying.

As Sally said, he does have a lot of stuff that's specifically geared for young adults.

However, most everything from his Cosmere universe is adult oriented. Though, he doesn't go as far as some authors when it comes to some topics, especially sex, he does put his characters in pretty fricked up situations with much violence.

He has been quoted stating that he only read the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire, or maybe he didn't even finish it, because he didn't like everything that was in it. He is a Mormon, so it may have interfered with some of his sensibilities.

I think its good for the genre to have a mix. Personally I think a lot of the sex and all that Martin goes into seems unnecessary at a certain point. It definitely has its place and contributes to the plot / character development and all in moments, but certainly not always or even the bulk of it (not having read the books in a while but having seen the show may be skewing my memory).

Even Abercrombie for example (who I'm currently reading) doesn't really have a whole lot of sex shown but definitely is more towards the gritty grimdark side of things.

But, and I can't remember if it is in Stormlight 1 or Stormlight 2, the way some of these sort of military slaves are treated definitely gets into that dark, gritty kind of stuff you were talking about.

Its sort of like it happens in the lighter books, you just don't see it on page as much, but in the ones you mentioned, you see it on the page and repetitively so it really drives the point home. In Wheel of Time, people were getting eaten, tortured, etc., it just mostly happens off the page and you read about it secondhand.

Its a tough balance, but for me I would much rather it contribute to the story in some meaningful way as opposed to be thrown in to try and check a box making it more marketable to current readers, etc.

Not true at all. He does have some works, especially more recent works in that category, but I think his biggest series are definitely not YA.

Mistborn gets quite dark.

One thing about Sanderson is that he is Mormon I believe so the does not believe in putting a lot of overt sex, gratuitous violence (although there certainly is some), or cursing in his books.

That being said he is an amazing writer and churns out great works.

It's been a great series so far, I read the first two books but it's been a while and before reading the third one I'm reading chapter summaries online for the first two to refresh my memory. I've forgotten so much about this series and the variety of races/characters, it's shaping up to be one of the all-time great fantasy epics.

Mistborn was odd because although it lacked anything overtly sexual (despite it centering around teens who are historically sexual in nature) there were very descriptive violent scenes with lots of blood, dismemberment, etc.

Sanderson just doesn't like boobs I guess

Stormlight is excellent. I read it after Mistborn, but much faster because I was more into it. Some of the flashbacks drag at first, but are absolutely amazing later in the story.

I do want to know if Kaladin will get laid, ever. Sorry about that minor spoiler.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've finished going through all 3 Stormlight Archives books and it has really made an impression on me. Is there anything else y'all would recommend outside of Cosmere stuff (I'm starting Mistborn now)?

There is a ton of stuff, I prefer to find completed series. It kind of depends on what you have read and what you haven't. At the bottom of the page right now there is a thread "Sci Fi / Fantasy Discussion and Recommendations".

That has tons of recommendations and different series people have liked, etc. Its pretty spoiler free and if I were you I would probably just do a little research on some of those and see if anything has a premise that interests you.
