Im going on my honeymoon to the Dominican Republic in two weeks, and just saw that another person died there the other day. Is this actually something to be worried about? It seems like hyper focused media scrutiny to me. None of the people in the pictures that have died seem to be particularly young or in good shape. Were staying at the Excellence which is a little ways outside of PC so wont spend any time in town. Thoughts?

UPDATE: We bailed. Headed to Jamaica now. Cost a little bit more but worth it to keep all the family from loosing their ever loving mind while we are there.

it's extraordinarily dangerous and the other half of the island is worse.

We have a trip to the excellence booked for in August. My wife is having a fit wanting to change it.

I wouldn't drink from the minibar, drive around the island in a rental car or let my wife walk around the resort alone especially at night, but I wouldn't cancel my plans either. If you want to be extra safe bring your own or buy your alcohol at the duty free shop.

It sounds like things have changed but the wife and I went to Paradisus Punta Cana 6 years ago tomorrow on our honeymoon and had a blast. We left the resort 3 times for different excursions and never felt in danger. Every local we were around both inside and outside the resort was nice as can be, I'm facebook friends with a couple of the bartenders that we made friends with at the resort. We had private transportation booked to and from the airport to the resort.

I have to be honest, I’m usually the person telling people they’re overreacting when it comes to the dangers of travel. Be smart and you will be fine - usually.

Even I have to admit that the thought of going to DR would give me pause.

And is that really the mindset you want to have while on your honeymoon?

Cancel DR. Go to San Jose del Cabo instead. You will be 1000x more safe and enjoy yourself way more!

Me and my wife went to Excellence in March and we were shocked to hear the stories a week later of someone being killed at another resort down there. We had a great time and felt 100% safe on the resort. Leaving the resort is a whole different ball game though. My head was always on a swivel when we got off the resort.

Use good judgement and trust your gut out there and you will be fine

Agreed, if I'm on vacation the last thing I want to worry about is something happening to me. Ruins a lot of the fun and keeps me from just acting normal as I would always be on my toes.

I’d listen to her. That place sucks

The best meal I had on my honeymoon was at the airport in Chicago on the way home

There is no way I would go. It's not worth it. There are plenty of places in this world to go. I would chose somewhere else.

Hope you have good travel insurance

ETA: I wouldn’t go. No way I could relax there knowing all those weird unexplained deaths happening lately.

If you go...just don’t drink any alcohol (or anything from the minibar including water) at the resort or leave the resort or walk outside your room alone. Yeah...that really sounds like a vacation
