Because it's an 80 year old franchise and it's easier to get a reaction by doing shite like that instead of coming up with an interesting story. And comic sales are now based on events and character upheavals.
Right now you have Tom King talking about Batman falling to "hit bottom" before he gives him a big surprise comeback. Then he says the fall will take 25 issues. That's over two years of Batman "falling".

I’m ALWAYS overly cautious over DC movies with characters I care about. I want this movie to disturb people. Because that’s who the Joker is at heart. There are depths of evil to the Joker that have not been explored yet in movies. I want them to push some boundaries.
I’ve seen one spoiler that tells me they’re on the right track for what I’m looking for, but I will remain cautious until I see the final product.

King kept inserting himself into the Batman role. Their whole spiel about the character never being able to achieve happiness led me to dropping Batman titles for good. Well. That and whoring out the “marriage at last” thing for sales.

Y'all probably know this, but after his comments about changing Batman forever, DC announced that they were moving him from Batman to the Catwoman comic. And he'll be cowriting the New Gods movie.
