I'm not up on the history of this event, but you know other countries were getting radiation readings and knew that something was up in the USSR.

Sweden detected the radiation and then the USSR finally came clean about the severity of the event

Once Sweden started to detect radiation. They informed the United States and our satellites took photos of the planet. That's what set off the triggers for the rest of Europe.

I liked how in the show the Deputy Chairman was steadfast in his decision to not evacuate the city until he learned that people in Frankfurt weren't letting children play outside because of radiation. It was a good television "oh shite" moment.

Riveting series thus far. I am surprised the 3 plant workers going back in with flashlights weren’t tethered to something outside.

They may have been IRL. The facts are they they went in to release a valve so that water could be pumped from the tanks. We know they wore wetsuits. We know the flashlight(s) went out during the process due to radiation. And Spoilers...

We know they get out and live long lives. Was there some residual light somewhere? Did they feel their way back? Or were they tethered? I don't know.

Just finished episode 1. Very good. It’s led me down a rabbit hole on reading everything I can about the event. Horrifying.

The corresponding podcast featuring the writer of the series is really good.

Gives the backstory on why they chose to do certain things and extra production information
