Most of these are detective but include a few books in each series where the detective was "laid off/retired/suspended" (a common theme apparently )
Harry Bosch (Los Angeles)
Lucas Davenport (Twin Cities)
Walt Longmire (Wyoming)
Kevin Kerney (New Mexico)
Joe Pickett (Wyoming) *Game Warden, not a detective, but a knack for landing in deadly piles of shite
I have listened/read probably 80+ from these series and would recommend all of them.
Nice timing on the thread as I am close to finishing the Joe Pickett series and could use something fresh for the summer. Probably check out the Robicheaux or Scudder series next, thanks for the recs.

The Prey series with Lucas Davenport by John Sandford is very good, especially the early ones. It kind of tailed off later in the series. His Virgil Flowers series is also enjoyable.

The pendergast novels are an easy and fun read.
He's not a PI but an FBI agent who pretty much gets to choose his own cases. Originally from new orleans but works out of new york.

If you like Joe Pickett, try Paul Doiron's Mitch Bowditch series. Similar to Pickett only Bowditch is a Maine game warden, single with a bit of a "bad boy" streak in him.

Have you read the hardy boy series. So good, and probably your speed.

thanks. I just finished the last Joe Pickett audiobook available on RB today. I'll give Dave Robicheaux a try first but nice to have a backup option.
